interview

Escape in the chest, fun in pen and ink.

As soon as I entered Mr. Ma's studio, I only smelled a room full of ink. Antique collections and dazzling books show my master's rich and lasting experience and accomplishment, taste the fragrant tea brought by energetic teachers, and start a dialogue of "teacher-student love" for more than six years.

Fei: Mr. Ma, look at your excellent works, such as your rooms, and look at the natural interest and charm and dynamic artistic conception revealed by the simple lines in your works. Please talk about your pursuit of China freehand brushwork. Poe: The so-called freehand brushwork is to write about the escape in the chest. Chinese painting pays the most attention to the emotion and interest of pen and ink, which contains the author's foundation, intelligence, cultivation and realm in one fell swoop. The pen and ink full of affection, sincerity and interest is the good line of Chinese painting. Only by thinking hard and racking your brains (of course, there are times when you are handy) is a composition full of originality. I have been painting for more than 50 years, and I am often at a loss (in front of the master). Badashan people are sloppy, with both form and spirit, and even flesh and blood. The charm and strength of plum blossom birds are still difficult for me to achieve. This is exactly what I pursue in freehand brushwork Chinese painting.

Fei: I have seen your collection of paintings and calligraphy. Among them, mountains and rivers, flowers and birds, figures and animals all have unique calligraphy and memorable poems, and you also play with knives to print them. I would like to ask about the relationship between poetry, books, paintings and seals and your unique paintings of donkeys and beasts.

Poe: Actually, this is a very knowledgeable and professional question. Although it's a cliche, I'll talk about my thoughts with my stubborn temper like a donkey. Influenced by my grandmother since I was a child, I embarked on the road of Danqing. Writing seal cutting is also casual, and writing poetry is purely elegant and playful. As a domestic painter, I specialize in painting, and painting without painting is definitely not good. Books are the bones of paintings, and knowing seal cutting can add more interest. Writing poetry is a refined portrayal of reading and life experience. With these external skills, Dan Qing's work is bound to be smooth sailing. As for the relationship between animal painting and sister art, it is my own experience of watching, riding, feeding and writing donkeys.

Fei: Mr. Ma, as a world-famous artist, you are also the president of Beijing Taoranting Painting and Calligraphy Institute. What is the relationship between your artistic creation and social activities?

Poe: Of course, calligraphy and painting is an important part of my life. Besides, Beijing Taoranting Painting and Calligraphy Institute is another stage for my artistic activities. Generally, painting and calligraphy institutes hold activities twice a month, where people get together to talk about calligraphy, painting and printing, spread painters' paintings and learn from each other. Cadres, students, teachers and calligraphy lovers gathered in Kyoto to add a touch of color to the spiritual civilization of the capital. Pen meetings are also common in Guangdong, Shandong, Jilin, Hebei, Henan and other parts of the country. Participating in these activities can not only enjoy the famous mountains and rivers, but also make old friends and new friends. It's my pleasure. Holding an annual exhibition with China Poetry and Calligraphy Research Association and China Artists Association, exchanging artistic events with China Senior Art Research Association, and participating in various activities of China Calligraphy and Painting Art Research Association are also social contacts after my creation.

Fei: Looking at your interesting and traditional works, how did you first embark on the road of art during your 50-year journey of painting and calligraphy, and which teachers did you admire?

Edgar Allan Poe: I didn't go to a regular university because of my hobbies (I don't object to academic education and ideas). Nature is my best teacher, art galleries, museums, Liulichang and so on. The place where these artworks gather is my charming classroom. Mr. Wang, Mr. Wang, Mr. Chen and others are unforgettable masters in my artistic sea journey.

Fei: Can you briefly talk about the relationship between Japanese painting, oil painting and Chinese painting?

Oh, that's a big problem, but I'd better make it simple! I don't know much about Japanese painting. The nation has its own aesthetic point. There is a saying that Chinese painting is deeply influenced by western painting. Some paintings are original, while others are beyond recognition, neither western painting nor Chinese painting. Only the national is the world! Without the interest and rich artistic conception of Chinese painting, the right way to talk about Chinese painting is to absorb the advantages of foreign culture on the basis of adhering to tradition and carrying forward the spirit of national culture. It is said that in the China art circle adjacent to Japan in the east, artists centered on Mr. Yu Junzhi insist on taking the traditional ink and wash art of China as the center, and on the basis of absorbing the essence of foreign culture, they dominate one art group after another and are active in the beautiful Japanese archipelago. Although my husband has enjoyed the western scenery, "I still want to drink oriental miso soup sometimes."

Fei: Mr. Ma, reading your poems also has a special flavor. Have you ever tried to write poetry?

Poe: Although I am a member of the Chinese Poetry Association and write poems purely for fun, I admire Li Taibai for fighting for wine and writing poems. Although it has been ineffective, the snoring continues.

As Mr. Wang spoke, he took out "Famous Chinese Paintings" and "Ma Nanpo's Collection of Paintings and Calligraphy". The old gentleman and I enjoyed "the poet coquettish, walked through the snow, crossed the small bridge, chewed the moon in the drizzle at Jianmen"; "Tie Guai Li, a wink, you coax me, I coax you".

Singing and singing, they exchanged a comforting smile and sang songs about the end of the year.
