Wang Mian was born in poverty. He herded cattle for others when he was young, and became a talent by self-taught. When he was seven or eight years old, his father asked him to herd cattle on the field. He secretly ran into the school to listen to the students reading. After listening, he always kept it in mind silently. When he returned home in the evening, he completely forgot about herding cattle.
My father was furious and beat Wang Mian. Afterwards, he was still like this. His mother said, "This child is so obsessed with reading, why not let him alone?" From then on, Wang Mian left home and lived in a temple. As soon as night came, he would quietly come out, sit on the lap of the Buddha statue, and recite in the dim light of the ever-burning lamp until dawn.

Wang Mian studied and became a learned and versatile Confucian scholar, but he failed in many tests and burned his career and articles. Wang Mian acted differently from ordinary people. He always wore a high hat, a green raincoat, wooden sandals, and carried a wooden sword. He sang loudly and walked back and forth in the city.

Wang Mian said: "I have fields to cultivate and books to read. Why should I stand in the court with a book case from morning to night and be driven by slavery?" While traveling in Dadu, another friend recommended him to be an official. He refused again and returned to his hometown, living in seclusion on Jiuli Mountain in Kuaiji. He planted many plum blossom trees and built three huts, called the "Plum Blossom House". He called himself the "Plum Blossom House Owner" and made a living by selling paintings. He also made a small boat and named it "Duckweed Xuan", and put the boat on Jianhu Lake.
