Plants mostly grow in wet woodlands or bushes, mainly distributed in China, northwestern Sichuan, southern Gansu and northwestern Hubei. Plant propagation methods include sowing propagation, ramet propagation and static tissue culture, but ramet propagation is the most commonly used.

Iron chopsticks should be properly watered and fertilized during maintenance. Plants like to be wet, so they should always keep the basin soil wet during the growth process and keep it dry in winter. Iron chopsticks are not particularly demanding on fertility. Generally, compound fertilizer is applied once after germination, after flowering and before winter comes. During the maintenance period, it should be trimmed properly to remove residual flowers and branches.
