Thirty-two proverbs of Yin Zu's lifelong education

Diligent, lazy and sincere. All evil should be done, and all good should be pursued.

It's really life and death, bodhicitta. Convinced and eager to hold Buddha's name.

Master Yin Guang taught many disciples all his life, and his eldest disciple, Master Desen, summed it up into eight sentences and thirty-two words. These eight proverbs are not only the focus of the master's education for all beings, but also his own. Therefore, if we can grasp these 32 words, we will know something about Yin Zu's education.

Before entering the text, let's briefly introduce the life of Master Yin Guang. The master is from Heyang, Shaanxi, and was born in a family with strict family education. Because Shaanxi is a remote area in the mainland, the lives of ordinary people are relatively hard, so the master has developed the habit of thrift since childhood. According to the record of "Indian ancestral home", once a disciple was looking for him, and the whole temple looked everywhere but there was no trace. Finally, I found that the old man used to wash clothes in the patio. At that time, Yinzu was 80 years old, but he was still washing clothes, which showed his industrious virtue. This is influenced by the education of elders since childhood.

Later, when his career became mature, he took the initiative to become a monk. During becoming a monk, the virtue of a master can be simply listed as two points. The first is "hard-working". There are rice heads, water heads and vegetable heads in Buddhism. Used to pick up vegetables and boil water. He did all these austerities seriously, serving the public and taking pains. The second is to "understand the cause and effect." Being a mage is the treasurer of Buddhism (case: responsible for the finance of the whole temple, including food, clothing, housing and transportation, etc. ), he got a great feeling from it, knowing that the cause and effect of Buddhism can't be missed at all.

Since then, he has been practicing in Putuo Mountain in the South China Sea behind closed doors for more than 30 years, without any contact with the outside world, and devoted himself to reading Tibetan books to enhance his confidence. The pure land thought inspired by Long Shu's early pure land literature is now used for meditation and serious support. The name of the master was later known to the world, because a Gao Henian layman published his article publicly, and everyone knew that there was such a monk. Therefore, ten years in Suzhou after the age of 70 has become the busiest period for the master to educate all beings.

Throughout the master's life, from beginning to end, it was purely pure land chanting Buddha to influence the public. What is the impact? Here is a brief explanation based on these eight 32-word proverbs.

Always say

Of these eight sentences, the first four are "Do your best and be honest. Don't do evil, do good "is the truth that teaches us to be a man." "As the saying goes, it is important to lay a good foundation. Being a good person is a good foundation for learning Buddhism. As for the last four sentences, "it's really life and death, it's bodhi." "I am convinced that I am eager to hold the Buddha's name. I am talking about secular law. Because even if people do well, the highest can only be incarnated in heaven; Heaven is still in the six divisions of the wheel of karma, but it will still fall, just like shooting arrows at heaven, it will still fall. Therefore, we must also emphasize the birth method, so as to solve the cycle of life and death of the six Tao, and to settle down and achieve our goals. These eight sentences are actually well-founded. The last two sentences of the first four sentences are based on the proverb in Nirvana Sutra: "All evil must be done, and all good must be sought. Self-purification comes from Buddhism. The last four sentences are the enlightenment of Wu Chu Zen Master (the 12th ancestor of Pure Land Sect) in Qing Dynasty.

(1) Dunlun scores

The first sentence is "Allen tries his best". Ethics is the relationship between people. Anxious people are also kind, indicating that the relationship between people should be getting better and better. Among ethical relations, the most basic is family ethics, and others, such as getting along with neighbors and interacting with people after leaving society, are included. Since there is a relationship between them, it is necessary to thicken these relationships with kinship, which is called "Dunlun". As for how to start? The key lies in the word "all points". Each of us has more than one identity. When we have elders in this world and heirs in the next, we may be children, parents or brothers. We must be competent in any role, so that our relationship will gradually get better. To have a good relationship, it is very important that both sides can do their part.

China people emphasize "five relationships"-monarch, minister, father and son, husband and wife, brother and friend. According to the development of social groups, it is from "husband and wife" that other relationships such as "father and son" and "brother" have emerged. As for how to carry forward the "five virtues" and how to make them harmonious and friendly? Master Yin Guangda said that the main point is only one word "filial piety". Filial piety is very important For example, in some places in the southern province of Taiwan Province, ancestor worship cards in the main hall of Sanhe or Siheyuan are a sign of attaching importance to filial piety.

What does this mean? Explain "don't forget your roots." Today, we can base ourselves on society and learn Buddhism with good knowledge. where i was from? This is from my parents. If we attach importance to filial piety, it shows that we still have a grateful heart. With this grateful heart, things will be easy. Because of filial piety, a family will be safe and auspicious, which will have a good influence on neighbors, communities and even the whole country. Because of this, ancestors repeatedly emphasized the importance of filial piety. Nowadays, many people think that people in society are not old, but in fact, the good people in society still account for the majority, because if there are many bad people, we can't have the opportunity to sit here. However, although the bad guys are only a few, they are really a headache. Therefore, it is up to everyone to carry forward filial piety to influence the bad guys and make the whole society move towards the light. This is the first point, which is an important basis for us to learn Buddhism.

(2) eliminate all evils and maintain integrity.

"Be honest with others." "Idleness" is interpreted as "prevention" and "prevention" here. "Evil" refers to people who have a negative influence on psychology. As far as the development of today's society is concerned, many things have a very bad influence on people's body and mind. Therefore, as a Buddhist, we should guard against bad things; In particular, be careful and pay attention to things that have hindered your past life. We are all ordinary people, and everyone has his own habits and temper. Therefore, it is hard to say what is wrong and what is bad. However, there is a big principle, that is, as long as someone or something will hinder my future life, I will pay attention to the dike. This is the general principle, regardless of details.

Then say "honesty". Those who are "saved" will also be preserved. "Honesty" can be explained from three aspects. First, when it comes to "truth" and "sincerity". For example, when we study Buddhism, we know that there are many Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, ghosts and gods in the universe, so whatever we do in public must be done in private, that is, we must be "what we look like". Second, make an explanation of "sincerity" and "sincerity". For example, we worship Buddha, greet and bow in Buddhist temples on weekdays, and we should be pious and respectful in our hearts; Master Yin Guangda said, "Stay at a respectful distance, stay at a respectful distance." . Third, "sincerity" can also be interpreted as "plain" and "simple".

In 29 years of the Republic of China, master Yin Guang was eighty years old. A few days before his death, the old man said that it was inappropriate for Lingyan Temple to have no abbot, so it was necessary to have an abbot. The candidate in his mind at that time was the owner of the prison. Because the temple has a good impression on Master Miao Zhen from top to bottom, I think he is diligent and studious, so I passed without objection. On his deathbed, Master Yin Guang encouraged Master Miao Zhen to lead the Dojo in a down-to-earth manner, and not to talk about ostentation and extravagance, because ostentation and extravagance didn't help life and death at all, and it was all empty. Although this is a revelation from Master to monks, it is more important for disciples at home. For example, in dealing with the death of elders, we should not be extravagant and ostentatious, because it will not help them in the afterlife. If such a lively virtual scene can make the dead die, we have to borrow money to do it even if we are poor. But just because it doesn't help, you have to do it simply. The above is the third explanation of "sincerity" (insipid), and give a few examples. We can draw inferences from other things in our daily life.

(3) heinous

The third sentence, "don't do evil", means don't do bad things; According to the precepts, it is "abstinence". Among the evils, the founder of Yin Guang said that "killing" is the most serious, so we should give up killing. You may think that we stopped killing after studying Buddhism a long time ago, so why not say more? But although we don't kill animals, there are still many nuances to pay attention to. For example, Bodhisattva does housework on weekdays and prepares three meals in the kitchen. Pay more attention to the cleanliness around the sink, especially in summer, to avoid attracting ants.

Everyone has experienced that ants are easily drowned if they are not dried on the stage. In addition, if there are children at home, there will inevitably be yakult, candy, biscuits and other sweets. If the child eats candy, be sure to teach him to take the candy paper under the tap and rinse it before throwing it away, because some candy paste will stick to the candy paper. If left untreated, ants can easily get stuck and suffocate when they come. Also, don't throw yakult or aluminum foil bags full of juice after eating, because sweet water will attract ants to run in and die. Therefore, it is best to rinse it with water before discarding it (the aluminum foil bag should be cut open with scissors first), so it is not easy to attract ants. This is the way to learn Buddhism. Don't speak too abstruse, as long as you practice it in your life at ordinary times.

(4) Pursuing beauty.

Let's start with "all good practices". If we keep the precepts, this is called "holding". In society, many people think they are good people because they can do good things. For example, if others have nothing to eat, I will give them food; There is nothing to wear, so I will provide him with clothes. Yes, it is good for people, but in terms of details, the so-called good deeds should be more than that. What is "goodness"? There are many things to consider, but at least three points should be included: first, as far as time is concerned, it is not only for immediate interests, but also for the future. Second, it is not only good for yourself, but also good for others. Third, everything we do conforms to an excellent relationship between heaven and earth. Only by satisfying the above three points can it be called "good".

In ancient times, a rich foreign worker wanted to provide winter relief and cook porridge to help famine refugees. Because it is freezing in winter, everyone wants to eat hot food and can get some money, so after the news was announced, people from dozens of miles away came in. However, due to the lack of proper planning in advance, there was a serious riot on the day of rescue. In the cold weather, impatient people pulled and pushed each other, and more than 20 people died on the spot.

As soon as I heard that more than 20 people had died, the members who stayed in the house suddenly choked to death because of shock. After the incident, people looked back on the whole process and found that such a good deed was really debatable. The weather was so cold and there were so many people, and the person in charge did not make careful arrangements and precautions in advance, which led to saving people from harm. How can it not be regrettable! It can be seen that a good thing must be done after careful consideration, and the result will be satisfactory. If you just want to be a good person praised by everyone, but don't think about reality carefully, doing good deeds is often not good for people.

(5) It is really the bodhi of life and death.

The above four sentences "try your best to be honest." Don't do evil, do good ",this is the basis of being a good person, but for those who study Buddhism, this is not enough." Because the most important thing to learn Buddhism is to end the cycle of life and death, you must learn for life and death. Life is impermanent. Usually when we fall asleep at night, we are "dying" because we may not be able to put on our shoes tomorrow. If you can wear it, you can continue to live; If you can't put it on, it means that life is over. It is precisely because life is impermanent that we should always be prepared for life and death. If you don't study Buddhism for this reason, even if you have listened to the teachings of many ancestors, it is useless.

Speaking of which, you may think you can do it, no problem. But it is unbearable to think that my family and friends are still sinking when I have good grades (avoiding life and death). What should I do? This is about bodhicitta. The so-called "bodhicitta" does not preach Buddhism like "The Exorcist"; If you can make a wish to influence your family, neighbors and friends to learn Buddhism, this is "bodhicitta". However, when it comes to this, the problem comes again. There are so many ways to practice Buddhism. How should we choose and guide others? Today, we must master a correct path, that is, the "pure land of chanting Buddha with fame" that can make all living beings become Buddhas.

(6) I am convinced that I am eager to hold the name of Buddha.

There are three main points in chanting Buddhist names: one is "faith", the other is "sincere desire" and the third is "chanting Buddha with one heart". What is "conviction"? I believe what Buddha Sakyamuni said-there is bliss and there is amitabha. Secondly, I am convinced that the forty-eight wishes made by Amitabha are by no means false. In addition, I firmly believe that the Ten Buddhas absolutely praised the Elysium and the famous Buddhist practice. This "belief" is very firm, and even if Sakyamuni Buddha comes to persuade us to give up the practice of chanting Buddha, we will not waver at all.

The second "sincere wish" is divided into two aspects. First of all, we should be disgusted with the world we live in. The founder once put forward a metaphor, saying that the world of nuns is like a prison, without freedom; It's like a toilet, dirty and smelly. Because this is not a place to stay for a long time, you should leave as soon as possible. British scientist Hawking once said that in a thousand years, the earth will no longer be suitable for human habitation, because nature has changed so much that all living conditions will go from bad to worse. Therefore, we should hate the world of women. Secondly, we should long for the paradise in the west. We wandered about life and death without robbery, suffering and suffering in the six divisions of the wheel of karma; Now I want to go home, go to Elysium and die forever. I should be happy and enthusiastic, running with joy. There are enough "likes and dislikes", and the desire to die is profound and real.

Finally, the third point of the Buddhist name method is "to recite the Buddha with one heart." How can I concentrate on chanting Buddha? According to the founder of Yin Guang, the focus is on the chapter from the General Trend of Shurangama Sutra to the Bodhisattva's chanting of Buddha: "All six roots are taken, and the net thoughts come one after another." This means that when you recite Buddha, you should completely concentrate on the phrase "Amitabha". Whether it is self-study or * * *, you must listen to every word clearly; From the heart, from the mouth, and then from the ears, every detail must be clear. I believe everyone is familiar with this formula of "listening". If it can really be carried out, Ding Hui will make great achievements every day and will win in the future.

These eight sentences and thirty-two characters are the main axis of the lifelong education of the master of printing light. The first four sentences and the last four sentences are closely related and inseparable. The last four sentences must be based on the first four sentences, so that they can be implemented and used as a starting point. In other words, if the Taoist profession wants to make progress and achieve something, it must first cultivate a sound high-quality personality; The wisdom and solemnity of Buddha and Bodhisattva are all based on being a man. Furthermore, the first four sentences should be matched with the last four sentences to be complete. You can try to observe that people who know how to learn and recite Buddhism are definitely different from those who don't. Only by knowing Buddhism can we know what is best for our relatives and friends. In a word, the founders have outlined and pointed out the way for us, whether it is secular law or birth law. If you can express the wishes of your ancestors and be diligent in statutes, you will be self-interested and altruistic and become bodhi.
