Gejiu City was founded and prospered because of tin. It is the largest modern tin industrial base in China and the earliest and largest tin production base in the world. The development of tin industry has a history of more than 2,000 years. According to archaeological discoveries, humans lived in the territory about 50,000 years ago. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the indigenous residents had reached a high level of civilization. In the Western Han Dynasty, Gejiu belonged to Bengu County. With the penetration of Central Plains culture, tin, silver, and lead mining and smelting industries emerged. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, a large-scale division of labor and cooperation had been formed. After Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, the tin industry flourished. In the 31st year of Guangxu (1905), the Gejiuchang Official and Commercial Company was established, using imported machinery, equipment and technology, and hiring foreign experts to carry out tin production operations, setting a precedent for modern production in Yunnan's metallurgical industry. In the first year of Xuantong (1909), the Bisezhai-Hekou section of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was opened to traffic. Until the end of the 1930s, the Gejiu tin industry reached its peak before liberation. There are as many as 4,400 private factories, and the export volume of tin reaches 11,000 tons at the peak, accounting for more than 90% of the national tin export volume, ranking first in Yunnan Province's commodity exports. In the early 1950s, Gejiu Tin Industry was listed as one of the 156 key projects in the country. After 50 years of construction, Gejiu has been built into a modern industrial city that mainly produces tin and various non-ferrous metals such as lead, zinc, copper, and comprehensively develops chemical, textile, building materials, mechanical and electrical, pharmaceutical, food processing and other industries. The cumulative production of non-ferrous metals is 1.82 million tons, including 870,000 tons of tin. It has contributed more than 5 billion yuan to the country and earned US$1.3 billion in foreign exchange.
The region’s cumulative proven reserves of tin, lead, zinc, copper and other nonferrous metals amount to more than 8 million tons, of which 1.82 million tons are tin, accounting for one-third of the country’s tin reserves. Secondly, there are precious metals such as gold and silver and non-metallic mineral sources such as nepheline, feldspar and kaolin. The reserves of nepheline are nearly 3 billion tons and can be mined for thousands of years. At present, Gejiu has relatively complete modern mining, selection and smelting supporting equipment for non-ferrous metals mainly composed of tin. The mining, selection and smelting technology of tin can represent the advanced level in the world today. It has an annual production capacity of 8.15 million tons of nonferrous metal mining, 11.5 million tons of mineral processing, and 215,000 tons of smelting. Non-ferrous metal smelting capacity accounts for 33% of the province's total. 110 products in 11 series are exported to 47 countries and regions around the world. Yunxi brand fine tin won the national gold medal and enjoyed export inspection-free treatment.
The Tianti brand solder bar won the national silver medal, and the White Monkey brand solder wire was rated as the Ministry of Excellence.
