Today, Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang formed the "Wu Hancheng", which was named by the National Government with the beginning of 1927 when Wuchang and Hankou merged into the capital. Although the three towns were formed late, they have their own characteristics, and the process of their emergence, development and prosperity is also different.

Wuchang, as a place name, first appeared among the three towns. It was a large settlement gradually developed by tribes in the late primitive society in Xia and Shang Dynasties, and was under the jurisdiction of Jingzhou at that time. To the Zhou Dynasty, it belonged to Hubei, the Warring States to Chu, the Qin Dynasty to Nanjun, and the Han Dynasty to Jiangxia. Hankou, as a place name, appeared in the historical records of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, about 1400 years ago. Hankou at that time refers to the mouth of the ancient Han River into the Yangtze River. The place where the Han River flows into the Yangtze River has changed many times in history, so the position of Hankou is also very different from today. For example, in the Southern Dynasties, Liang Wudi marched into Hankou and established a small Miyagi, also known as Hankou City, about 5 kilometers north of Kameyama Mountain. The city is right where the rudder fell today. Five hundred years ago, a sandbar, five hundred years later, upstairs. Hankou has a history of more than 500 years, beginning with the diversion of Hanshui River from 1465 to 1487 during Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty. The Hanshui River was originally injected into the Yangtze River from the south of Guishan, and its mainstream was injected into the Yangtze River from Jijiazui in the north of Guishan during Chenghua years. After the diversion of Hanshui River, residents began to move into the low-lying reed island and build dikes to build houses. Although Hankou became a residential area a little late, it quickly developed into a trade distribution center because of the convenient shipping of the Yangtze River and Hanshui River. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, the population was only over 6,000, which increased to 50,000 in the Wanli period. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, there were 37,000 households with a population of10.3 million, which was famous for its salt, rice, wood, cloth and medicine with Zhuxian Town and Jiangxi Town in Henan Province. By the middle of19th century, the Tianjin Treaty signed after the Opium War opened in Hankou, and foreign powers poured in. In the late Qing Dynasty, Hankou set up British, Russian, German, French and Japanese concessions, and set up 12 foreign consulates. After the Westernization Movement in the late Qing Dynasty, a number of modern industries sprang up, which made Hankou a commercial port city with nine provinces in the interior and the ocean outside, and was also called the four famous towns in China along with Zhu Xian in Henan, Foshan in Guangdong and Jingdezhen in Jiangxi.

After the Opium War, Hankou was turned into a foreign port, and Britain, France, Germany, Russia and other countries 10 joined in, dumping goods and plundering raw materials, making Wuhan a big distribution center and transshipment center for goods and raw materials. Hanyang is second only to Hankou in historical records. In fact, before its naming, Hanyang existed under the names of Anlu, Hanjin, Shiyang, Dunyang and Mianzhou. According to legend, Dayu "diverted water from the mountain". Today, there are Wang Yu Temple and Gong Yu Monument, which were built by later generations to commemorate Dayu's dredging of the Han River into a river. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi's "high mountains and high waters" in Hanyang became a legend. In 606 AD (the second year of Sui Daye), Hanjin County was changed to Hanyang County, and the name of Hanyang began. After the county government moved to Hanyang City in Tang Dynasty, it developed rapidly. Later, after many geographical and name changes. 1948, Wuchang and Hanyang merged into Wuchang City, and Hankou became Hankou City independently. After liberation, the State Council merged Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang (the seat of the county government and its adjacent areas) into Wuhan (the former Hanyang county moved to Caidian, retaining the county organizational system), and the Wuhan Municipal People's Government was located in Hankou. At this point, the three time-sharing towns in Wuhan in history really merged into one.
