Is Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu or Inner Mongolia?
Although the base is named "Jiuquan", it is not within Jiuquan City. The first reason is that the international situation of the Cold War was tense, and the names of missile and satellite launch sites in various countries avoided the real address to keep it confidential; the second reason is that in 1949, the Ejina Banner was once managed by the Jiuquan Prefecture of Gansu Province (later, the Alxa League was separated from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1969. Among them, Ejina Banner was placed under Jiuquan City, Gansu Province. It was not until 1979 that the Alxa League, including Ejina Banner, was restored to the jurisdiction of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region); third, the base is located deep in the desert grassland, and there is no famous landmark to borrow its name from. It can be named after the nearest city, the historical city Jiuquan, which is more than 300 kilometers southwest.
