In ancient Indian mythology, Yan was the god in charge of the underworld, and there was already a legend about Yan in the Rigveda, the oldest existing poetry collection in India.
The concept of Yan may have been formed earlier, with more than one source. In fact, Yan has many different versions of legends in ancient India. After Buddhism was founded, it followed the strict concept and regarded Yan as the god who managed hell.
After Yan Di's belief was introduced into China, it interacted with the belief system of Taoism, a local religion in China, and formed a view of Yan Di with China characteristics: Ten Halls Yamaraja. Also known as Yan, Yan.
Extended data:
Ten Yamaraja. Yan Luowang is regarded as the master of hell, in charge of the cycle of hell. It was introduced into China from India during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. Due to the mutual influence between Yan belief and China's local religious belief system of Taoism, Yan China's Ten Buddhist Temples Theory with China characteristics has been formed, among which the Ten Temples Theory is one.
This theory originated in the Tang Dynasty. It is said that the Emperor of Heaven awarded Yan Luowang the title, and Yan Luowang was in charge of Hell and Five Mountains. Hell is divided into ten halls, each with its own owner and name, called the Ten Kings of Hell, and collectively called the Ten Halls of Hades. The ten halls of hades have their own owners, birthdays and full-time jobs, which are briefly described as follows:
The first class: Qin Guangwang Jiang (Guangming Jiang), born on the first day of February (said to be the second day of February), specializes in human life and death and is in charge of good and bad luck.

The Origin of Terror 2 There is a place in the East where people are hardworking and kind, and their lives are very good, but the good times don't last long, and disaster suddenly falls on them. One night, the earth collapsed and the river rose. The flood engulfed village after village. Survivors not only found the bodies of many relatives, but also found that the land could not be cultivated.
A young man named Yamaraja decided to go to the south to find a way to save him. When Lu Tu met a tiger, Yamaraja was so scared that he hid in the cave and fainted. After waking up, I climbed out along the mountain peak and met a god. Under the guidance of the gods, he killed the little green snake, scratched its skin, drank a bowl of snake blood and went back.
Folk tales: the origin of death
On the way, an old woman stopped Yamaraja and said, "This snake blood is an elf that is hard to find in heaven and on earth. If you drink it, you will become immortal and will not suffer on earth. " Yamaraja was unmoved and returned to his hometown.
When the original god learned of this, he jumped up and scattered the seeds to every corner of the earth, dropping a drop of nectar with snake blood. Since then, the world has been alive and people have a way out.
When the Emperor of Heaven knew about it, he handed over Yamaraja and became an immortal, in charge of people's life and death. Later, Yamaraja became arrogant and ran amok. God sent him down to the world as a ghost. Although Yamaraja was demoted, he still did his job, but he didn't dare to run amok again.
Since then, people have to report to him after death, and people call him "Ye Yan".
The Origin of Terror 3 Even villains are fearless, and no one is not afraid of Yan Luowang.
So how did Yan Luowang come from? Is there really a Yan Luowang?
In fact, the concept of Yan did not exist in ancient China. After Buddhism was introduced into China from ancient India, the belief in Yan began to spread in China. In ancient Indian mythology, Yan was the keeper of hades. After Buddhism was founded, it followed the concept of Yan, who was regarded as the king of Yan. After Yan belief was introduced into China with Buddhism, China people agreed with the concept of hell, but made some changes, and set up several Taoist gods in the world. In this way, Yan Luowang is no longer the number one figure in the underworld, but just an official in charge of specific trial affairs. Later, the power of trial was also divided, and Ah Yan became the "Yamaraja of Ten Temples".
There were different opinions about who was the master of Yan Luowang from Sui and Tang Dynasties to the end of Qing Dynasty. One theory is Han Qinhu, the general of Sui Dynasty. The Twenty-four History is forbidden to ghosts and gods, but the chronicle records the legend of Yamaraja after Han Qinhu's death, which shows that it was very popular at that time. It is said that when Han Qinhu was alive, officials from the underworld came to meet him. Emperor Wendi Sui heard that he specially gave a banquet to see him off.
Another way of saying it is that the Northern Song Dynasty was famous for its fairness and decency. It is estimated that it is for this reason that people "elected" him as Yamaraja.
There is also a common saying that Bao Zheng, a straight bachelor of Longtuge in the Northern Song Dynasty. With Bao Zheng's integrity and strict law enforcement, he is the most suitable candidate for Yan Luowang. Some people even say that when he was alive, he began to try triad cases. The so-called "day breaks the world, night judges the underworld", which is to prepare for the post after death.
There is also a saying that Jiang Wanli, the prime minister of the Southern Song Dynasty, returned to his hometown after violating Jia Sidao's rape right. Later, Yuan soldiers attacked the Southern Song Dynasty, and he drowned himself. Most people choose him because of his integrity.
