A gentleman is as light as water, the older he gets, the truer he is. A small population like honey, like an enemy in an instant, means:

A true friend is as plain as water, but the longer it takes, the truer the feelings become. Being friends with villains will sweet talk to you everywhere, but they will stab you in the back for their own interests and become enemies in the blink of an eye.

This sentence comes from Fang Xiaoru's poetry anthology "Xun Zhi Zhai Ji" in Ming Dynasty.
