Recently discovered in the Thousand Buddha Cave in Dunhuang, the Map of the Ten Kings of Ksitigarbha is painted with images of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the ten kings, and is accompanied by an inscription of its creation in the eighth year of Taiping and Xingguo's reign (983) in the Song Dynasty.

According to the Ksitigarbha Ten Wheel Sutra, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has countless inconceivable special merits and virtues that cannot be measured by all worldly voice-hearers and alone enlightened beings. The Sutra of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's Original Vows states that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has already attained the fruition status of the Ten Grounds, but in order to teach and transform sentient beings, he is still in the realm of the Sound Hearers and Pratyekabuddhas and does not want to become a Buddha.
