Introduction to Dangtu Golden Pillar Pagoda in Ma'anshan?
The Golden Pillar Pagoda is located in Baota Village, Gushu Town, Dangtu County, Ma'anshan City, where the Guxi River enters the Yangtze River mouth five miles west of Dangtu City, opposite the Huangshan Pagoda. It is a key cultural relic protection unit in Anhui Province.
The Golden Pillar Pagoda was built in the 17th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1589). According to old records of the Ming Dynasty, the territory of Dangtu was extremely poor due to frequent floods. At that time, some Feng Shui experts believed that a pagoda should be built to control the water outlet. In the seventeenth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1589), the villagers dug earth to build a polder dike and dug out a pit of gold. The county magistrate Zhang Jiazhen used the gold to buy people's land and build the foundation of the pagoda. "Tie Lin" was soon changed to "Golden Pillar", which means "not gold but with gold help, not column but column shape". In the sixth year of Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1667), it was renovated and a hall and a pavilion were built under the tower. It was revised again in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1929). The current hall and pavilions were all destroyed, but the six-cornered and seven-level ancient pagoda still stood proudly. There are stone steps inside the tower that can be climbed to enjoy the views.
The Golden Pillar Tower is a masonry structure with a height of 37 meters, a base diameter of 9 meters, and seven octagonal floors. The eaves of each floor are made of bricks to imitate bucket arches, and the base of the tower is made of bluestone. The tower body has a double-cylinder structure. The outer cylinder is a staircase, and the inner cylinder is the ventricle of the pagoda on each floor. Each chamber is a dome. The lower edge of the top is inlaid with Buddha bricks, and there is a Buddhist niche inside. There are pagoda doors on each side of each floor, with two doors. A lamp niche is built on the side. In the sixth year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1677), it was renovated and a hall and a pavilion were built under the tower. Flowers and bamboos were planted around it. All the halls and pavilions are now in ruins. The Golden Pillar Pagoda is exquisitely made and majestic. It integrates multiple functions such as religion, Feng Shui, and navigation marks, but is not complicated. The Buddha statue is delicately carved on the bricks, and the image of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is exquisitely carved. The lantern niches are cleverly designed. These structures are integrated into a bright pagoda at the same time. It is an isolated example among ancient pagodas in the province.
In September 2006, the tower was repaired in accordance with the maintenance plan of "repairing it as before and restoring the original appearance of the Ming Dynasty ancient tower" formulated by the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology. In January 2008, the repairs were completed.
