Feng Shui uses magnetic declination and maps to accurately orient

1. Magnetic declination

The north and south indicated on the compass are slightly different from the geographical north and south. The earth's northern hemisphere has a magnetic south pole, and the southern hemisphere has a magnetic north pole. The magnetic field vector generally points from south to north. The angle formed between the magnetic meridian and the geographical meridian is called magnetic declination.

According to regulations, if the magnetic needle pointing to the north pole N moves eastward, the magnetic declination is positive, and if it moves eastward, the magnetic declination is negative. Magnetic declination refers to the angle between north and true north when the magnetic needle is stationary. Shen Kuo, a scholar from the Northern Song Dynasty in my country, recorded in "Mengxi Bi Tan" that the geomagnetic north and south poles do not completely coincide with the geographical north and south poles, and there is a magnetic declination.

The magnetic declination angle varies with different longitudes. Feng Shui generally only discusses the magnetic north pole and does not use the geographical north pole. Therefore, when looking at the map to find the magnetic north pole, you need to convert the geographical north pole into magnetic north pole.

2. The Feng Shui value of magnetic declination

To understand the significance of this magnetic declination is to use GOOGLE maps or simply find the geomagnetic direction. For example, when the map shows true south and true north, the actual direction measured by a compass will be deviated. Feng shui is based on the direction of the compass pointer.

For example, when you look at the map in Beijing, many houses are due south and north. In fact, the direction measured by the compass is that the direction of the north needle is 5°50’ (5.84 degrees) east. Taking the Changling Tomb of the Ming Tombs as an example, the Feng Shui master said in a memorial that "Changling is the Genhai vein in the direction of Guishan Ding, and the hexagram is consistent." The direction of Guishan Ding should be 11 degrees to 20 degrees east of the north needle. time, the actual measurement on the map is 5.75 degrees north by east. We need to add Beijing’s magnetic declination of 5.84 degrees, which is exactly 11.59 degrees north by east, which is exactly the direction of Guishan Ding measured by the compass.

Similarly, the Forbidden City in Beijing is measured at 2.25 degrees north by west on the map, and the magnetic declination is 5.84 degrees north by east. The actual sitting direction of the Forbidden City in Beijing is 3.59 degrees north by east, and the direction is South by west is 3.59 degrees, which is the noon direction of Zishan, so the sitting direction of Bauhinia City is also a yin-grabbing entrance.
