Is March in Yangchun a lunar calendar or a solar calendar? Why is it called Yangchun?
According to the tradition in China, Yangchun March refers to the March of the lunar calendar.
The ancients divided it into four seasons and twenty-four solar terms, corresponding to December respectively. There are three months in a quarter, and each month has two solar terms.
China implemented the summer calendar as early as the Xia Dynasty. The ancients called the first month "early spring, early spring", February "early spring, mid spring" and March "spring, late spring".
Origin; Liu An in the Han Dynasty said in Huai Nan Zi: "After the vernal equinox ... the wind will clear up after the fifteenth finger." Tomb-Sweeping Day comes in March in spring, so "Tomb-Sweeping Day" is also called "March Festival".
Why is March called Yangchun Yangchun not a specific month? The ancients generally referred to the time of outing. That is, before and after Qingming. Specifically, it should be the end of February and the beginning of March in the lunar calendar. The temperature at this time is not too high. It is the time when birds are singing and flowers are fragrant, grass grows and warblers fly. And songbirds, that is, after the vernal equinox, will come out and sing.
Yangchun has two meanings here: first, from the perspective of 24 solar terms, Qingming is the first solar term in the last month of spring, which may be at the end of February or early March. Yangchun means that when it comes to Tomb-Sweeping Day, spring will soon be over. Summer is coming soon. The sun is the sun at this time, which can shine on people. So it's called Yangchun.
The second layer means yin and yang, that is, from yang to yin, from yin to yang. The ancients believed that everything in the world was born of yin and yang. Yangchun means that spring has reached its limit, and there will be no spring soon. After spring, it is late spring.
