Where is Ma Yun from?

There is a saying: "One side of the earth and water will nourish the other side." As a world-famous Zhejiang businessman, Ma Yun was always thought to be from Hangzhou. In fact, he was born in Hangzhou. His hometown is Gulai Town, Shengzhou City, Zhejiang Province. This town is located in a mountainous area, and the emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty has also been there.

Gulai Town is located in the northwest of Shengzhou City, the hometown of Shaoxing Opera, with Chongren Town in the east, Keqiao District of Shaoxing (formerly Shaoxing County) in the north and Zhuji City in the west, about 21km away from Shengzhou City. It has a community and 2 administrative villages under its jurisdiction, and is a mountainous town with beautiful ecological environment. According to Song Jiatai's Records of the Meeting and the Ten Records of Liang Zaiyan in the Tang Dynasty, it is recorded that "it is suitable to plow here, and the sky descends to Jiagu", hence the name "Gulai". In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), it belonged to the first township of Shun 'an, and was later called Gulai Town.

Gulai Town has a long history and outstanding people. According to legend, the well-off king of the Southern Song Dynasty (namely Zhao Gou, Song Gaozong) was chased by Jin Bing to Zhitouling, Gulai Town, and hid in the temple to have a rest. When Jin Bing chased him to the door of the temple, he saw a spider web and closed the door. Jin Bing thought that no one had entered the temple and left, so the well-off king escaped from danger. Later generations renamed it Huguoling to protect the monarch.

The influential figures in Gulai Town in modern times include Ma Laifa, the father of Ma Wang Yun, Ma Chuanjin, who invented the tea-fixing machine and the bamboo tea-frying machine, and Jiang Weizhuang, a professor, doctoral supervisor and expert in orthopedics. Therefore, Ma Yun's father once taught his son to be a man who will win glory for his hometown in the future.

Ma Yun's real ancestral home is Maxi Village in the north of Gulai Town, because after Ma Yun was born here, it became the most famous village among the 2 administrative villages in Gulai Town. The village is adjacent to Keqiao District, Shaoxing City. There are more than 39 families and more than 1,18 people in the village. 95% of the villagers in the village are surnamed Ma, and they all belong to an ancestor named Ma Min, so they and Ma Yun are family members who are related by relatives and friends.

It is said that the surname Ma in Maxi Village first moved from Fufeng County, Shaanxi Province, and its ancestor was a general named Zhao She during the Warring States Period. In 27 BC, Zhao She led the army to win Qin Jun, so King Zhao Huiwen gave Ma Fu (north of Handan City, Hebei Province) to Zhao She and named him "Ma Fu Jun". Zhao She's descendants were all named after Ma Fu. Later, the younger generation found this double surname inconvenient and unpleasant, so they deleted the word "Fu" and changed it to a single surname "Ma".

In the Western Han Dynasty, the descendants of the Ma family moved to Maoling in Youfufeng (northeast of Xingping, Shaanxi) for many years. In the Northern Song Dynasty, there was Ma Juanzhe in Fufeng County, whose name was Shou Cheng, who served as a doctor of remonstrance in the Song Dynasty, accompanied his wife Zhao, married Dow, and gave birth to two sons, Ma Zheng and Ma Min. When Zhao Gou, the emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty, heard that the Jin people were coming in, he led his troops to flee south. At that time, Ma Min was an official in Jiangsu, and fled south with the emperor, so he fled to a small mountain village in Gulai Town, Shengzhou. At first, the ancestors of the Majia family lived in the ravine to avoid the war, and later they moved to the village below the mountain to live, which is now Maxi Village.
