Where is Liu Bang’s tomb? Has it been dug up or stolen?
Channgling (Mausoleum of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty) has been excavated and is a national key cultural relic protection unit.
Changling is located in the north of Sanyi Village, Yaodian Town, about 20 kilometers east of Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province. It is the joint tomb of Han Emperor Liu Bang and Empress Lu.
There are two mausoleums juxtaposed to the east and west of Changling, the Mausoleum of Gaozu in the west and the Mausoleum of Queen Lu in the east. The site of the mausoleum was chosen at the highest point of Xianyang Plain, that is, on the former site of Qin Xianyang Palace. From a distance, it looks like a mountain peak standing tall and majestic. It faces the Weiyang Palace of the Han Dynasty across the river in the south, leans on the Nine Mountains in the north, and the Jingwei River runs through the mausoleum area.
Extended information
Changling is the first imperial mausoleum built in the Han Dynasty. It is the tomb of Han Emperor Liu Bang and Queen Lu Pheasant.
Historical records show that Liu Bang began to build Changling in the second year after he proclaimed himself emperor. It was modeled on Chang'an, the imperial capital of the Western Han Dynasty, and faced Chang'an City across the Wei River. Although the construction scale of the Changling Mausoleum of the Han Dynasty is not the largest among the imperial tombs of the Han Dynasty, its accompanying tombs are the largest among the imperial tombs of the Western Han Dynasty, and constitute a huge mausoleum group.
At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, the Red Eyebrow Army invaded Chang'an, massacred the city and set fire to it, and then excavated Changling. Both Gaozu's Mausoleum and Lu Hou's Mausoleum suffered disasters.
From 1970 to 1976, the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee conducted a comprehensive survey of Changling and discovered a large number of physical remains.
