The Origin of Nanjing "Li Ruyi" Place Name

Heiweipai

The oldest Nanjing Lane is probably Wuyi Lane. Wuyi Lane has a long history, with a history of 1600 years. When Sun Quan of Soochow established his capital in Nanjing, the military camp was stationed in Wuyi Lane. Wu Dong soldiers wore black uniforms, and this place was later called Wuyi Lane.

Compared with Wuyi Lane, the origin of the name Pipa Lane, not far from it, is much more romantic. In the old days, there was a ditch in the middle of Pipa Lane Road, which was covered with bluestone, with different density and thickness. On rainy days, pedestrians walk on it in clogs, tinkling like playing the pipa, which is known as Pipa Lane. Now the bluestone alley has become an asphalt road, and the sound of pipa has become an echo.

The purple bamboo forest on the new model road is also unrecognizable because of historical changes. During the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, there were large bamboo forests here, among which Zizhu was the most prosperous. A monk traveled here, but when he saw the swaying bamboo shadows and beautiful scenery, he settled here and founded a Buddhist temple named "Zizhulin". Zizhulin Temple became a famous temple in Jinling in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Later, the temple was abandoned, but the place names remained.

Many street names in Nanjing are related to Buddhism. In addition to Zizhulin, Xinjiekou also has a big incense burner. In the Yuan Dynasty, there was a Longxiang Temple with an iron tripod in front, which burned incense all the year round. People in Nanjing call the street where the iron tripod is located a big incense burner.

Adjacent to the big incense burner, there is a street called Mingwa Gallery. Ming tile, a kind of tile, is made of oyster shell, which is thin and light-transmitting. It can be covered on the roof or embedded in the window lattice. By the Ming Dynasty, Xinjiekou was already a bustling commercial place, and it was famous for selling Mingwa. Over time, no one remembers the original place name.

There were at least two prosperous commercial places in Nanjing in Ming and Qing Dynasties, one in Mingwa Gallery and the other in the south of the city centered on Sanshan Street. The name of Sanshan Street can be traced back to the Six Dynasties. There are three peaks in the southwest of Nanjing and the east bank of the Yangtze River, which are called Sanshanji in the world. This rocky mountain, together with Caishiji and Yanziji, is called the "Three Stones" in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Xie Tiao, a poet of Southern Qi Dynasty, climbed three mountains late. At sunset, he had a panoramic view of the bustling southeast of Jiankang City, and wrote the poem "Go to Sanshan in the evening and return to Wang Jingyi". The name of Sanshan Street comes from this.

There are poetic streets like Sanshan Street and alleys with sad stories like Qijiawan in Nanjing. It is said that a few years ago, during the Spring Festival Lantern Festival, Zhu Yuanzhang came to visit incognito and saw a watermelon lamp hanging at the door of a family. A woman with big feet was painted on the lamp, and a line said, "Mrs. Huaixi has big feet." Zhu Yuanzhang thought it was a satire on Ma Huanghou's Bigfoot, and ordered all seven families here to be hacked to death. The local people pitied his innocence and changed this place into Qijiawan.

In the history of Longpanli and Hujuguan, the terrain of Jinling is called "Longpanli and Huju". According to legend, Sun Quan was sent to Wu Dong in the Three Kingdoms, passing through this place, and once climbed Shishan (now Liang Qing).

Colorful summer, happy travel left the ancient Great Wall to the descendants of Le Tu donkey friends. The May Day Tourism Special focuses on the well-known domestic enterprises stationed in Malaysia to observe the geographical situation of Nanjing, and makes a famous comment of "Middle Plate, Shi Hu Residence". So these two places are named after Zhuge Liang's "Dragon Pan" and "Tiger Ju".

In ancient times, when people sent their friends out of Nanjing, they would send them to Chang Gan and then fold a willow branch as a gift to express their reluctant friendship. Therefore, Changganli frequently appears in literati's poems, representing a very beautiful image. Li Bai's famous sentence "We live near Changgan Lane, and we are all young and happy" created the story of "childhood friends" and was passed down as a much-told story. At the same time, Changganli is the earliest Buddhist center in Nanjing and the site of Jianchu Temple, the first temple in the south of the Yangtze River during the reign of Sun Wu.

According to legend, Zhu Yuanzhang, the great ancestor of the Ming Dynasty, was afraid of the rich man Yu Tonghai (because of the homonym "fish cross the sea and become a dragon"), so he gave Yu Tonghai an archway engraved with a hundred cats on his birthday according to Liu Bowen's geomantic map to show that cats eat "fish". Zhu Yuanzhang also planted willows all over the street, which means that willows string fish and dried fish to stop Yu Rui. Later, this street was named "Liu Ye Street".

Inviting the flute step is the place where the famous allusion "Stop the boat and listen to the flute" takes place. According to legend, Huan Yi, a famous musician in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, loved music and was good at playing the flute. One day, Wang Huizhi passed by here, parked in Qingxi, invited Iraq to play, played the "Three Tones" and left. The host and guests never said a word from beginning to end. It is said that this song is the later famous "Three Lane of Plum Blossoms".

In addition, Buddhism has left many scenic spots for Jinling City. Master Guang Yun gave lectures and talked extravagantly, and got the Yuhuatai; Dharma left Jiankang without saying goodbye, and Liang Wudi sent someone to chase him on a mule. As a result, the mule was suddenly caught between the peaks, so Dharma broke the reed and crossed the river. This is the origin of Luchang Temple, Dharma Cave and Mule Peak.

Many famous allusions also come from Nanjing, but nowadays, many place names are hard to find, such as anrakuji, where the "finishing touch" took place, Egret Island, which is "such an island where egrets divide the river" in Li Bai's poems, and Xinghua Village, which is "Qingming" in Du Mu's poems. Even the "Wuyi Lane", which has been passed down through the ages, still has place names, but where the original site is still controversial.
