Liu Yuxi’s representative works

Representative work: "Autumn Ci".

The value of "Autumn Poems" lies in the poet's unique feelings about autumn and its colors. It goes against the tradition of literati lamenting autumn in the past, praises the beauty of autumn, and expresses the beauty of autumn through the description of yellow cranes soaring into the sky. The author's enterprising spirit and open-minded optimism.

Full poem:

Since ancient times, autumn has been sad and lonely. I say that autumn is better than spring.

A crane flies above the clouds in a clear sky, bringing poetry to the blue sky.

Translation:

Since ancient times, I have felt sad and lonely every autumn, but I think autumn is better than spring. In the clear sky, a crane flew up from the clouds, which triggered my poetry to reach the blue sky.

Creative background:

Written when the poet was demoted to Sima Langzhou. In 805 AD (the first year of Yongzhen), Shunzong ascended the throne and appointed Wang Shuwen to reform the government. Liu Yuxi also participated in this reform movement. However, the innovation encountered strong opposition from eunuchs, vassal towns, and bureaucratic forces, and ended in failure. Shunzong was forced to abdicate, Wang Shuwen was granted death, and Liu Yuxi was demoted. What is valuable is that the poet did not become depressed after suffering a serious blow.

Liu Yuxi was thirty-four years old when he was demoted to Langzhou (Changde, Hunan). Just when he was feeling proud of the spring breeze, he was kicked out of the court. One can imagine his depression. But he has a strong desire for differences and wants to be different in everything he does, and refuses to follow what others say. "Autumn Ci" was written in this mood when he was demoted to Langzhou.
