The concept of watershed in Nanjiang culture

According to the concept of river basin, a large area of land south of Xijiang River, west of Pearl River Delta and east of the main stream of Pearl River Cloud Mountain can be classified into Nanjiang River Basin. It includes not only Nanjiang (Luoding River) and Xinxing River which flow into the Pearl River, but also Jianjiang and Yang Mo which flow directly into the South China Sea from northwest to southeast. Nanjiang originates from Jilongding at the junction of Xinyi, Gaozhou and Yangchun, and flows through Xinyi, luoding city and Yunan counties. Accepted by Zhen 'an River, another major tributary of Yun 'an County, Zhen 'an River originated in Yangchuntashikeng, Hekou Town, Yun 'an, and finally merged into Xijiang River in Nanjiangkou Town, with a total length of more than 200 kilometers. Jiangcao River is one of the water sources of Gaozhou Reservoir, which flows to the southwest and is also a tributary of the upper reaches of Jianjiang River, and finally enters the sea in Wuchuan. Several water sources are only a few hundred meters apart, and there is little difference in altitude, so it has become a transit point from Xijiang River to the South China Sea coast. Near Heshui Town, it joins another tributary river, which originates from Dashuiling in Xinyi and flows through villages such as Dong Tian, Shek Kip Mei, Huangsha and Yun Xin. Heshui Town, named after it, is one of the famous central towns in Guangdong Province.

At the intersection of Hengshui River and Zhishui River, there is a "Yang's Grand Ancestral Hall" dedicated to the ancestors of General Yang Guowei in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. There is a couplet in the temple that has been written for more than 200 years: "Heyuan milk, Beijiang tribe with Nanjiang". "Rushui" refers to Ruyuan County, and Beijiang is in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province. This couplet describes General Yang's arrival in southern Xinjiang from northern Guangdong, skillfully incorporating place names and water names, and once again proves that this river originating from Jilong Mountain in Xinyi is Nanjiang. Topographically, the Nanjiang (Luoding River) basin is surrounded by Yunkaishan Mountain in the northwest, Wuyunshan Mountain in the southeast and Xijiang River in the northeast, forming a closed valley basin. According to some data, Luoding Basin is the largest basin in Guangdong Province.

This geographical environment has brought great advantages to Nanjiang River Basin. Nanjiang river basin is located in tropical and subtropical flow areas, with a warm and humid climate.
