Historical evolution of Beidao District

Beidao District has a long history and is one of the main birthplaces of Chinese civilization. The Weihe River and the Jiehe River nurture this magical land. As early as 6,000 years ago, humans lived and multiplied here. Fuxi, the founder of humanities, drew the Eight Diagrams, made contracts, made etiquette, and taught fishermen here, thus starting the ancient oriental civilization. Duke Wu of Qin in the Spring and Autumn Period (688 BC) first established Gui County. After the unification of the Qin Dynasty, it was renamed Shanggui County. This is the earliest county administrative unit established in the history of our country, with a history of 2691 years. Since the establishment of the county here, successive dynasties have attached great importance to this "geomantic treasure land". They established roads within the county and built prefectures and offices to highlight its important strategic position and regarded it as an important place in Longyou. Wangyuan County, Han County, and Mianzhudao were established in the Han Dynasty; after the Wei and Jin Dynasties, it was Shang County; the Tang, Song, and Yuan Dynasties belonged to Chengji County; the Ming and Qing Dynasties were returned to Qinzhou; in the second year of the Republic of China (1913), the state was abolished and counties were established. Named Tianshui County.

After Tianshui County was liberated in August 1949, the county seat (now Qincheng District) was divided into Tianshui City, and the rural areas outside the county seat were named Tianshui County. Tianshui City and Tianshui County both belong to Tianshui Prefecture of Gansu Province. In December 1958, Tianshui County was merged into Tianshui City. In December 1961, counties and cities were separated. The county seat of Tianshui County was temporarily located in today's Qincheng District. In July 1962, it was moved to Beidaobu. In September 1984, the jurisdiction of Tianshui City was expanded. Five townships in the central part of the territory (Mapaoquan, Shetang, Ershilipu, Ganquan, Maiji) and Beidao Town formed Beidao District, and the rest remained Tianshui County. Both districts and counties are under the jurisdiction of Tianshui City (at that time, Tianshui City was promoted from the original county-level city to a sub-prefecture-level city, with jurisdiction over Qincheng District, Beidao District and Tianshui County). In April 1985, Beidao District was abolished and its territory still belonged to Tianshui County. In July 1985, Tianshui evacuated land to establish a city, implemented a city-governed county system, abolished the original Tianshui County, and established Beidao District.
