The climate of the Karakum Desert
The climate of the Cuman Karakum Desert is continental, with long, hot summers and variable but relatively warm winters. The average temperature in July in the north and along the Caspian Sea coast is 26~28℃ (79~82℉), and in the central Karakum Desert it is 30~34℃ (86~93℉). In the Repetek Reserve in the southeastern part of the Turkmen Karakum Desert in January, the average temperature is -4℃ (25℉) in the north and 4℃ (39℉) in the south. However, the temperature fluctuates greatly and can range from - within 24 hours. 20℃(-4℉) rises to 10℃(50℉). The average annual rainfall is 70 mm (2.75 inches) in the north and 150 mm (6 inches) in the south. Precipitation mainly occurs in winter and early spring, with more than half occurring between December and April. Almost no snow. The prevailing winds are mild northeasterly and northwesterly winds.
