During the Changxing period of the later Tang Dynasty (930-933), he was not selected as a Jinshi, so he lived in seclusion at Jiushiyan in Wudang Mountain. Later, he moved to Yuntai Temple and Shaohua Shishi in Huashan Mountain to practice Taoism. Befriended the hermits Li Qi, Lu Dongbin and others. In the third year of Xiande of the Later Zhou Dynasty (956), he was called to Beijing to ask about the art of ascending to Huangbai. Emperor Shizong ordered him to admonish the officials, but he refused. During the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty (976-984), he was summoned to Beijing. He was highly respected by Emperor Taizong and was given the title "Mr. Xiyi". According to legend, he died at the age of more than a hundred years. Chen Tuan is good at "Yi" and has written "Wuji Diagram", "Xiantian Diagram", "Yi Long Diagram", etc. His thoughts on "Yi" had a great influence on Song Dynasty scholars. He was also a practitioner and theorist of inner alchemy, and his inner alchemy theory laid the foundation for the various schools of inner alchemy in the Song and Yuan dynasties. He has disciples, but he has not started a Taoist sect. The "General Register of Zhuzhen Sects" records that the Taoist sect with him as its ancestor was named Laohuashan Sect, which was founded by later generations.
