How to preserve strawberries in winter
The premise that strawberries can survive the winter safely is that growers need to pay attention to choosing varieties with early flowering and fruiting, shade tolerance, humidity tolerance and disease resistance.
At the same time, the plots planted with strawberries need to be fully applied with base fertilizer (organic fertilizer and NPK compound fertilizer can be fully mixed and scattered on the plots, and the soil can be deeply cultivated).
Secondly, it is suggested that strawberries should be planted in two rows with wide ridges.
The purpose of this is to have a ridge and ditch wide enough for later management.
Before transplanting and planting strawberries, pay attention to ensuring sufficient soil watering, which is beneficial to the survival rate of plants (select seedlings with strong growth and disease-free roots for transplanting). In the process of planting, we should pay attention to the fact that the soil can't bury the heart of the seedlings, so as not to affect the growth. After planting, we should water the seedlings to improve the survival rate of the plants. After planting, each ridge is covered with plastic film, which is helpful for heat preservation and water conservation, improving water utilization rate and reducing evaporation and water in the shed (when the outside weather temperature gradually decreases, the shed should be closed in time).
Overwintering mulching is an important measure to obtain high yield of strawberry in open field. The mulch can be wheat straw, rice straw, corn straw, leaves, decomposed horse manure, etc. The covering period is generally carried out after the frozen water is filled and the soil has just frozen. The covering thickness is about 5 cm. In early spring, when the average temperature is higher than 0℃, the cold-proof materials can be removed, the surface can be cleaned, and the soil can be loosened to preserve moisture and promote growth. In areas with late frost hazards in spring, the removal of cold-proof materials can be appropriately delayed to prevent plants from freezing.
The following are some considerations about coverage:
I. Coverage time
In early winter every year, strawberries go through several frosty low-temperature exercises, and when the temperature drops to -7℃, the soil "frozen in the midnight snack during the day" is the most suitable for covering.
Second, the method of covering.
1. Coverage time. Strawberries should be watered with antifreeze before they are covered with cold-proof materials. Be sure to fill them up. Irrigation time will be carried out when the soil is about to enter the freezing period, and the ground will be covered one week after irrigation.
2. Covering materials. It can be used for all kinds of crop straws, leaves, soft grass, decomposed horse manure, fine fertile soil and so on. If soil is used to cover the cool, it is best to cover a small amount of grass first, and then cover the soil to avoid damaging strawberries when removing soil in spring.
3. Coverage thickness. It depends on the local climatic conditions and the thermal insulation performance of the covering material. Generally, the thickness is 3 ~ 5 cm, and the grass used per mu is about 200 ~ 300 kg.
4. Covering method. It is best to cover it twice. After pouring the frozen water, dry it slightly and cover it with some materials first. After a few days, the temperature stopped rising and all the materials were covered tightly.
