Is the subtropical high pressure the trigger for this year’s floods?
This year there are many floods in southern my country, and the floods can be said to be fierce.
Floods in the Yangtze River, Huaihe River, Taihu Lake and other areas are relatively frequent, so why is there so much rain this year? What causes this situation? Some meteorologists believe that this year's subtropical high pressure is too strong.
It was not until people began to build satellites in the 1960s that research in this area gradually began. Before high-altitude reconnaissance technology, there was very little knowledge of this kind of meteorology.
Because the equator is hotter, the air is heated and rises, and the continuous flow of atmosphere from the equatorial region moves toward the poles. The Earth's rotation causes the atmosphere to move in the subtropical region (30 degrees north latitude) from west to east, parallel to the Earth.
This will hinder the following air, causing other upper air to gather and be forced to sink, creating a subtropical high. It is the key to the transport and balance of water vapor, heat and energy in middle and high latitudes and low latitudes.
The subtropical high that affects China is called the Western Pacific Subtropical High, and it is very close to China. In summer, when the sun shines directly on the northern hemisphere, the subtropical high pressure will affect the climate of mainland China.
The subtropical high pressure itself has a higher temperature, comes from the ocean, and is rich in water vapor. When it enters mainland China, it meets the colder airflow from the north. The moist air and the cold air from the northwest combine to form continuous rainfall, which will form a broad rainfall belt, that is, frontal rainfall or cold peak rainfall. .
Under the combined pressure of the Siberian blocking high pressure and the northern cold vortex, the subtropical high pressure was unable to successfully move northward and could only stay in the south and develop unsteadily. The south has been unable to get out of the rainy season and has been experiencing large-scale rainfall, resulting in caused the flood.
The subtropical high pressure is indeed one of the causes of floods in mainland China this year. I hope that this release of the subtropical high pressure can pass as soon as possible. At the same time, we must also be prepared for flood prevention and waterlogging.
