The story of Fa Hai can be found in the folk legend "The Legend of White Snake". Xu Hanwen, also known as Xu Xian, was originally a clerk at a drugstore in Hangzhou. One day, he met Bai Suzhen by the West Lake. They fell in love at first sight and soon became a couple. Zen Master Fahai of Jinshan Temple passed by Hangzhou and saw Xu Xian with a "bewitching look" on his face. He told the truth that Bai Suzhen was a thousand-year-old snake spirit from Mount Emei who turned into a beauty and came to the people. Xu Xian didn't believe it at first, but later Fahai used a trick to make Xu Xian drink Bai Suzhen with realgar wine on Dragon Boat Festival. After Bai Suzhen drank realgar wine, she fell drunk on the bed and her true colors were revealed. Xu Xian was shocked when he saw a big white snake coiled on the bed and passed out. After White Snake woke up, he saw that Xu Xian was dead; he went to Kunlun Mountain overnight, stole the fairy grass, and revived Xu Xian. Soon, Fahai deceived Xu Xian to Jinshan Temple and appointed him as a monk. In order to save her husband, the White Snake mobilized the water tribe and flooded the Jinshan Temple. Xu Xian took advantage of the chaos and escaped from the temple and returned to Hangzhou. The couple reunited briefly. Finally, Zen Master Fahai used Buddhism to suppress the White Snake under the Leifeng Pagoda.
The story of Jiang Ziya and the Song family collecting five ghosts comes from "The Romance of the Gods".
Jiang Ziya lived in the home of a foreigner in Songjiazhuang. He had nothing to do, so the two of them went to the back garden to relax. Ziya discovered that this was a geomantic treasure land, and if he built a building, he would become rich and powerful in the future. Ziya said: "I have no interest in repaying my brother. If a building is built here, according to Feng Shui, there will be thirty-six jade belts and gold belts as many as one liter of sesame seeds." The stranger said: "I will not hide it from my dear brother, I have also built it here. Seven or eight times, it was burned after being built, so I have no intention of building it again.” Ziya said: "I choose a day, my dear brother, just build the building. On the day when the beams are laid, you just entertain the craftsmen. I will suppress the evil spirits for you, and nothing will happen." The stranger agreed and left. That day, Ziya was sitting in the Peony Pavilion to see what was wrong. After a while, a strong wind blew up, flying sand and rocks, scattering earth and dust, and monsters were seen in the light and shadow of the fire, with faces of five colors, ferocious and weird. Ziya, with his hair disheveled and holding a sword, pointed with his hand and waved the sword. There was thunder in the sky, and the five monsters hurriedly knelt down and said, "The little beasts don't know that the immortal is coming, and they are begging for their release." Ziya said, "Since you want to "Sheng, you are not allowed to disturb the people here. You, the five animals, are ordered by my talisman to go to Xiqi, and you will be at your service in the future." The five demons kowtowed.
