A carriage set off from the occupied city of Rouen to the port of Le Havre, where the French army was still guarding. The passengers in the car were a pair of industrialists, a pair of nobles, a pair of businessmen, two nuns, a Democratic politician and a prostitute nicknamed Ball of Suif. They passed through the town of Decimal Point, and the Prussian officer who occupied the town did not allow them to continue because Ball of Suif refused to stay with him for the night. At first, all the fellow travelers in the car expressed sympathy for Ball of Suif and seemed to share her hatred. But as the trip dragged on, the attitudes of the industrialists, nobles, and businessmen changed day by day. They first used gentle persuasion, then insinuated, and finally launched a massive attack, forcing the suet ball to agree to the enemy officer's unreasonable demands. But afterwards, they were even more contemptuous of the number one fat ball, showing their "nobleness". The novel uses a prostitute who is ashamed to commit herself to the enemy as a contrast, and vividly depicts the shamelessness of the aristocratic bourgeoisie who only care about their own interests and ignore the dignity of the nation.
