"Born in Suzhou and Hangzhou, buried in Beimang", why did Beimang become a favorite burial place for ancient emperors?
In ancient times, there was a saying that "people lived in Suzhou and Hangzhou and were buried in Beimang". People live in Suzhou and Hangzhou when they are alive, and it is best to be buried in Beimang after death. Beimang is the favorite burial place of the ancients.
North Mangshan was originally called Mangshan. Because it is located in the north of Luoyang, it is called Beimang Mountain. There are not only a large number of ancient tombs in Beimangshan, but also countless emperors and nobles buried here. There are 24 imperial tombs in archaeology, which span from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Cao Wei Dynasty, the Western Jin Dynasty and the Northern Wei Dynasty to the late Tang Dynasty. And Beimang can become a burial place favored by emperors, mainly for the following reasons.
First, geographical reasons. Since ancient times, tombs have prevailed in the Central Plains, and a good burial site must meet several conditions-thick soil, low water, dryness and smoothness. North Mangshan Mountain is more than 300 meters above sea level, with gentle terrain, high in the middle and low around, no mountain cover and no ravines. The soil is composed of loess, with deep soil layer, good cohesiveness, solid and dense texture. The unique geological structure has created the characteristics of less water seepage, dry soil and no looseness, making it a suitable place for burial.
Second, historical reasons. Beimang Mountain is located in the north of Luoyang. Due to the limited anti-corrosion technology in ancient times, people can only choose to be buried near their former residence after death. The capital is prosperous and not suitable for burial, so Beimang Mountain, which is close to the capital and has a good geographical position, has become the first choice.
Third, feng shui reasons. When people just died, they were considered to be at the junction of Yin and Yang. The anger generated at this time will disperse with the wind when it meets the wind, and will stop when it meets the water. With hills, we can prevent the wind from blowing away, and with rivers, we can gather and accumulate.
Beimang area, which is surrounded by mountains and waters, is an excellent treasure house of feng shui for tombs. Mangshan Mountain is the remnant vein of Qinling Mountain, and Qinling Mountain is the remnant vein of Kunlun Mountain. Kunlun Mountain has been regarded as the birthplace of Long Mai since ancient times, so people also think Mangshan Mountain is on the Long Mai. So Beimang became a treasure trove of feng shui.
