Information about life at the University of Sunderland
The school provides rooms for every student who needs accommodation. First-year students, European students and international students have relative priority. All accommodation areas of the school provide free Internet, parking services and independent laundry rooms. Students can take free shuttle buses from the apartment to other places. There are 6 school dormitories (HALL OF RESIDENCE) in Sunderland, and some others. The rental houses managed by the school are also marked with the school's FLAT mark. Generally speaking, if you live in a dormitory, it is not recommended to live in a rental house managed by the school.
The dormitories of the six schools are: CLANNY HOUSE, FORGE, PRICINT, ALL SAINTS, PANNS BANK, SCOTIA QUAY. (Arranged by geographical location from south to north) This is where many Chinese people live. There are also many houses. The red building is right next to FORSTER BUILDING. The location here is good, only a 2-minute walk from UNIVERSITY METRO. It's less than 3 minutes' walk from MURRAY LIBRARY. It takes about 5-7 minutes to walk to CITY CENTRE. It only takes 3 minutes to walk to SPORTS CENTRE (the first choice for those who like swimming, playing ball, and fitness)
The accommodation is available in rooms for 10 people and rooms for 6 people. But most rooms are for 10 people. But it's often not full. Some FLATs are mostly Chinese. But there are also FLATs where there is only one Chinese person. However, specific requirements can be submitted to ACCOMANDATION OFFICE.
If you take classes on CHESTER ROAD, which is the main campus (general education, language, arts, nursing, medicine, non-business), it is too close. There are also many rental accommodations nearby. This location is very good. It's also safer. But no matter how safe it is, no one should run around at night. The most popular dormitory at the University of Sunderland is also the dormitory used for publicity by the school website and other media. This dormitory has won an architecture award. Built in 1994. It is close to the Wear River and on the other side is the ST PETER campus. Next door is the SCOTIA QUAY dormitory. This dormitory area is the most difficult to apply for in the University of Sunderland dormitories, and it is also the most beautiful dormitory area. Feng shui is very good. There is a river in front of the window, and I can see the river every day, the green trees and grass and the campus on the other side. There are many old people fishing here. However, most of the British people live in this dormitory area. Generally, freshmen live in HART COURT and old students live in DOUGLAS COURT. For example, in a certain year, there was only one Hong Konger and two Malaysians. The others are all British.
This is also the preferred dormitory for British people. If you want to experience British university culture, this is your first choice. But parties are often held here. It can be a bit noisy at times. If you are willing to blend in with the British, this is a great place. But in case you are not used to their life, you will have suffered enough for this year. Just be alone and slowly become depressed. Although you can see the school's ST PETER campus, you need to go around a bit to get there. It takes 10 minutes of brisk walking and 15 minutes of slow walking. There are still big uphill and downhill slopes, but there are school buses.
The British here don’t use the kitchen very much. There is a flat for 6 people, a large kitchen, and a large living room, which is great for parties. 2 WC and 2 SHOWER are separate. In good condition. Some upstairs have balconies. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to ST PETER subway station. It takes about 6 minutes to walk to SUNDERLAND subway station. This is a dormitory that only graduate students can apply for. The price is also the most expensive and the conditions are the best. It is also next door to PANNS BANK. These two dormitories have one RECEPTION. There is parking space. The geographical location is similar to PANNS BANK, close to the Wear River and the campus on the other side. In addition, it is closer to FISH QUAY. Buying seafood is more convenient. But it still takes 1 minute from PANNS BANK to SOCITA QUAY.
Since the dormitory is only for graduate students, it is not difficult to apply.
There is a private bathroom in the dormitory. No need to share with others. There are both wired and wireless networks, which is very convenient. Main wire speed is good. 100M. Internet access is very convenient. It’s also nice to have a school bus to pick you up and drop off. Located near Rocker, northwest of St. Peter campus. For students majoring in business, computer science, and mass media, the School of Science is very close here. And it's only 5 minutes away from the Metro station. You can go to some small supermarkets and McDonald's just outside your door. It is also a room for one person, and 5-6 people can only use the bathroom and kitchen. The room is not big. But there is a network cable. It is a dormitory area that is more convenient for traveling to school.
As for HOMESTAY, it is too difficult to find here, so I suggest you not consider it. When it comes to accommodation in Sunderland, like other cities, it is cheaper to rent a house outside than on campus. The cheapest one can be as much as 200 pounds a month, and usually around 200-280 pounds a month. Of course, it is shared with others.
There is a big landlord in Sunderland called RECHARD. His office is 200 meters north along the road after getting off at ST PETER subway station. The location is probably across the bridge from south to north. Walk about 300 meters. The name of the office is SUNDERLAND ACCOMANDATION, located on the west side of the road (the road runs in the north-south direction). There is information about a lot of houses here and there are Chinese employees.
If you want to live closer to the ST PETER campus (Business School, Law School, Computer Science). You can stay in the ROKER area. There are many Chinese and Indians here, and there are large supermarkets like LIDL and a large number of fast food restaurants nearby. Public security is slightly worse than at the beach.
Some houses in the UK have poor sound insulation between the same floor, and some have poor sound insulation between the upper and lower floors, so please pay attention to this when renting together.
Because Sunderland has a subway, going to school on the subway has become a feature of Sunderland. A student ticket of £30 for one year (only within Sunderland area) allows you to sit as many times as you want on WEEKDAY. Very good deal. So because of this, you can live in other areas, such as MURRAY LIBRARY, or CHESTER ROAD, or another campus. There are many houses and it is very convenient.
This is one of the cheapest areas in the UK. If you save money, it will not be much more expensive than in Beijing or Shanghai, or even cheaper (especially the rent, which is equivalent to RMB 2,000-3,000 yuan/share) moon). Meat prices are about the same or slightly cheaper than those in Beijing and Shanghai, while vegetable prices are more expensive (cheaper compared to the south). A piece of Chinese imported cabbage weighing less than 500 grams is about 9.9 yuan. The main shopping places are: TESCO: a large supermarket located in the BRIDGE SHOPPING CENTER in the city center, focusing on food.
ICELAND: Opposite TESCO, they sell a lot of frozen food.
MORRISION: Located in the northeast of the North Shore, it is a large supermarket on the seaside. Generally, those who live in ROKER can walk (about 20 minutes). For other places, it is best to drive. Open until 8 or 9pm. Bigger than TESCO. Sell a lot of stuff.
ASDA: Large supermarket. It's a bit far, so you usually go there by car, and things are very cheap.
LIDL: Next to ROKER and ROKER's MCDONALD, a medium-sized supermarket is also not far from the school's ST PETER campus. Selling very cheap things, mainly food. Some are not comprehensive or very big, but they are very cheap. Note that this supermarket does not provide free plastic bags.
BRIDGE is a large shopping mall located in the city center. It contains supermarkets, food stores, clothing stores, shoe stores, etc., many of which are very large. You can basically buy a lot of things there, including clothes and shoes.
There are also some shops selling clothes in the city center, such as PREMARK, which are not expensive.
Wilknson is a large shopping mall.
It is similar to a domestic department store, located south of Dafu (Chinese Supermarket). Some things inside are a bit expensive. But the variety is full. There are also many people selling clothes.
Daifuku is a Chinese supermarket where you can buy a lot of Chinese dishes and ingredients. Although the price is relatively high.
There are two relatively large vegetable markets, and everyone usually buys food at the Jack MARKET inside the BRIDGE. The other one is outside the Bridge. Not expensive, cheaper than in supermarkets.
There are also other Yin Pound stores, which are all located in the city center and are easy to find. In addition, there is a small fish market here. Continue east on the road from PANNS BANK dormitory, which is towards the northeast corner of Sunderland's south bank. There is a white house. Generally open from 9 am to 2 pm. There are plenty of fresh and cheap fish, shrimp, etc. Usually on weekends, you will see many people from Newcastle coming here to buy aquatic products.
