Chronicles of Japan Weather News Company

Japan Weather News Company was founded in 1970. Its predecessor was the Japan branch of the United States Oceanroutes (hereinafter referred to as the branch). It obtained the forecast license issued by the Japanese government in 1975. And began to provide commercial meteorological services in the early 1980s.

In 1980, the branch began to receive hourly satellite cloud image information; in the same year, the branch established a special database for meteorological and oceanic forecasts.

In 1993, the branch completed the digital processing of meteorological satellites, provided Japanese television with a 30-minute cloud image display for the first time, and developed an automatic playback system for weather forecast programs.

In 1986, the branch was officially separated from its parent company and renamed Weather News Japan, Inc. (WNI). In the same year, WNI received a forecasting license issued by the Japanese government. Its business scope has gradually developed from Japan to overseas. In 1993, WNI merged with the American Marine Weather Services Company (the original parent company), becoming the largest private weather service company in the world. WNI now has offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong, China, which not only carries out meteorological consulting and weather navigation services, but also promotes the meteorological software and hardware products it develops.

In October 2000, Weather News Company’s weather information television video “Weathernews” was stationed on Sky PerfecTV! Channel 744.

In November 2000, Weather News Company acquired the shares of "B.V. Weerbureau HWS", a company established after the privatization of the Dutch Meteorological Service, and exchanged 1,000 shares of Weather News Company for 100 shares of "B.V. Weerbureau HWS".

In December 2000, the "Weathernews" channel was launched on Japan Broadcasting Satellite (BS) digital TV channel 910.

On December 25, 2000, Weather News Company was listed on Nasdaq Japan (ナスダック?ジャパン) with the stock code 4825.

On December 26, 2002, Weather News Company was listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange with the stock code 4825.

In March 2003, Weather News Company established its Shanghai branch in Shanghai, mainland China.

In May 2003, Weather News Company signed a shipping meteorological business contract with American Airlines.

On August 8, 2003, Weather News Company was delisted from Nasdaq Japan.

On October 31, 2003, Weather News Company was delisted from the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

On November 4, 2003, Weather News Company was listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange with the stock code 4825.

In March 2004, Weather News Company began to provide meteorological consulting services to Uni-President Supermarket.

In April 2004, Weather News Company began to provide weather consulting services to China Mobile and established subsidiaries in Spain and Italy.

In May 2007, the contract between Weather News Company and China Television Company expired and the contract was not renewed.

On May 31, 2007, the "Weathernews" channel withdrew from Sky PerfecTV!.

On December 1, 2009, Weather News Company established WNI Weather Culture Creation Center (WNI Weather Culture Creation Center).

On May 22, 2010, Hiroshi Ishibashi passed away.

On April 4, 2011, Weather News Company and TV Asahi launched a comprehensive cooperation.
