Qianling Mausoleum in Liangshan

Qianling Mausoleum is a national key cultural relics protection unit. It is the joint burial mausoleum of Gaozong Li Zhi, the third emperor of the Tang Dynasty, and Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history.

There is a legend about the location of Qianling Mausoleum: Soon after Tang Gaozong ascended the throne, he sent his uncle Changsun Wuji and Taishi Ling Li Chunfeng, who was in charge of astronomy and calendar, to choose a place for his mausoleum. After the two went to Liangshan for inspection, they found that it was a "holy land with dragon veins", so they returned to Beijing to report to Emperor Gaozong, advocating that Liangshan should be located there. However, Yuan Tiangang, another famous Feng Shui master in the Tang Dynasty, strongly opposed it. He said to Emperor Gaozong: "Liangshan From the outside, it looks like a geomantic treasure, but there are many shortcomings upon closer inspection: First, although Liangshan is surrounded by water on the east and west sides, which can surround the dragon spirit, it is cut off from the dragon veins of Taizong. If the people choose this place, they can prosper for three generations. However, as the site of the imperial mausoleum, I fear that the country will be in danger after three generations. Kuang Liangshan is the tail of the dragon vein of the Zhou Dynasty. The young woman is lying flat on her back. Your Majesty chose this place for fear of being controlled by women from now on." After hearing Yuan Tiangang's grand argument, Emperor Gaozong hesitated and withdrew from the court. After Wu Zetian heard about it, she blew Gaozong's attention that night. Naturally, she praised Changsun Wuji and belittled Yuan Tiangang. In the morning of the next day, Gaozong made a holy decision and designated Liangshan as the site of the mausoleum. When Yuan Tiangang heard this, he looked up to the sky and sighed: "The person who succeeded the Tang Dynasty must be Wu Zhaoyi." He was afraid that he would be implicated in the future, so he resigned from office and went out to travel.

After the site for the mausoleum was selected, the ministers debated endlessly about the name. Some ministers suggested to Gaozong: The name of Taizong's mausoleum is Zhaoling, which means to show the emperor's aura. His Majesty's mausoleum should be named Chengling to inherit Taizong's grace. Changsun Wuji reported: "Liangshan is located in the northwest of Chang'an. In the Bagua, it belongs to the position of Qian. Qian is Yang, Heaven, and Emperor. Chang'an is the imperial capital of His Majesty in this life, and Liangshan is naturally the imperial capital of Heaven where His Majesty lives for ten thousand years, on earth and in heaven. , heaven and earth are united, heaven and earth are united, and the Lord decrees that your majesty will be the emperor forever. In accordance with the opinion of the ministers, let’s name it Qianling!” Gaozong was very happy after hearing this, so he named it Qianling. As everyone knows, Qian not only refers to heaven, but also refers to the monarch, that is, "Qianling" is the mausoleum of the emperor. Li Zhi only thought that he would enter the mausoleum a hundred years later. He did not expect that his wife, the queen, would generally follow him into the mausoleum a hundred years later. In other words, Wu Zetian, who followed Li Zhi into the mausoleum, should also be the emperor. Unfortunately, all subsequent developments fulfilled Yuan Tiangang's prediction. According to this legend, "Qianling" is indeed the joint tomb of the two emperors Li Zhi and Wu Zetian.
