I just came back from New Zealand on a 10-day self-guided tour of New Zealand. The tour departed on 10/9 and returned to Shanghai on 10/21.

The train from Auckland to Wellington takes a long time and is tiring. There are many good towns in New Zealand. Many hotels in New Zealand are not much more expensive than ordinary ones, unlike hotels in our scenic spots. It’s twice as expensive as the bus. A five-dollar sandwich costs six or seven dollars. Try to rent a hotel with a kitchen so you can go to the supermarket to buy something and cook it yourself. Foreign restaurants are relatively simple. There was only one soup with toast on the previous day. We were basically half full after eating the soup. I suggest you stay in the South Island for a few more days. It would be better if you can travel by car.
The cost of fuel in New Zealand. It is around 1.55-1.69 (depending on the international oil price and the region) which is very cheap compared to their income. It costs 200 yuan to refuel in Shanghai. The regret of this trip is that I have too little time. Stay for 5 or 6 days and you can see almost all the places I want to go. If you particularly want to go to Milford Sound, you can only save the opportunity for next time. October is spring in New Zealand and there is more rain. , it rained half of the days. Driving precautions: 1. Right-hand vehicles have priority: the left-turn lane allows vehicles in the main lane to pass first. New Zealand drivers are not as impatient as us and wait until they can no longer see the cars far away on the main road before turning. When driving around the road, be sure to let right-turning vehicles pass first. 2. Speed limit highway: 100KM City: 50KM, indicate special sections.
3. Pedestrian priority: Foreign pedestrians are the largest. Unlike us, pedestrians have to turn when there is a green light. There are no traffic lights near many sidewalks, so be careful to give way to pedestrians.
4. Some routes cannot be used by rental vehicles, so please pay attention to the map (but there are very few such sections).
5. New Zealand’s gas stations have convenience stores, which are basically self-service. After setting the added amount, go to the convenience store to check out and quote the added amount.
6. Return the car: usually go to the airport. Just pay attention to your rental car company's signs in the parking lot and park there. Then someone will come to collect car keys and other things. (I'm worried that if someone pretends to be a company employee, they will get a car.) Although it is winter, most of it is still green and the weather is very good. It is said that the average temperature in winter is 10 degrees, which is very comfortable during the day. Although Christchurch is said to be the second or third largest city in New Zealand , but the urban area is actually very small.
Except for Auckland, other cities in New Zealand are like this, smaller than you think! July 2, Christchurch-Lake Tekapo-Mount Cook-Queenstown. Starting today, I got up at 6 o'clock for many days in a row, miserable! However, once again, when I walked out of the motel, Newman's bus was picking people up. Because Newmans is the same company as the intercity we booked, and they are at the same bus station, so I asked Liu Zhao to go up and ask if he could take us to the bus station, so that the walk would not take more than 20 minutes. Hehe, this old man is very nice. Not only did he let us get on the bus, he also said that there seemed to be a lot of people on the bus we booked. Maybe he can keep us with this Newman.
It is a bit luxurious, mainly because you can go to Mount Cook, but it costs more than 40 US dollars per person! You have to stop for 10-30 minutes every two hours on the way. In a small town you can eat and take photos. This is the style here. All bus drivers do this, unlike China, where it takes 7-8 hours to get to the end. Many interesting photos were taken in the first town. On the way there is Lake Tekapo, which is also a very bright lake with snow-capped mountains beside it. It didn't take two seconds to get back into Newmans, and everyone in the bus was envious of us. Mount Cook is also good. The hotel where we rest is quite high-end. The scenery at the entrance is beautiful and the photos are crazy.
It’s past 7 o’clock in Queenstown. It was dark, but it was quite bustling. After settling in at Pinewood, I headed into town for KFC. By the way, this is the worst place we have stayed in all the way, haha, it is a little more difficult. It is mainly a wooden house with three rooms, one of which is occupied by foreigners. On July 3, Queenstown-Te Anau-Milford Sound-Te Anau-Queenstown still got up early, and the trip to Milford Sound, a major attraction, was another 12-hour day. During the two days we were here, we stayed up all night and couldn't see any scenery, haha. Queenstown Franz Josef still woke up early on July 4th and was in a low mood! Today was very easy, just a 4-5 hour drive to Franz Josef, which is the west coast of the South Island.
Take the Atomic Shuttle (minibus company, it will be cheaper, and it is more cost-effective to take theirs for short distances). After passing Lake Wanaka, there were delicious fish on the road. I played billiards with Meat and passed the Fox Glacier to Franz Josef. The motel, Gateway Motel, is the second best on our road. It is a small white building on the first floor. After a few days of hard work, it's really nice to have a place like this. We could see the glacier but we didn't have enough time to do a half or full day hike which was a real shame. Thinking about it this way, I didn't go to see the glaciers in Sichuan, and I didn't go this time either. I've missed it several times and will definitely go next time! Easy to pack and 10 minutes away. Really small. KFC has nothing, and there are no big supermarkets.

July 6th, Christchurch-Kaikoura, the best two days of this journey begin! By the way, I better get up early. The more interesting ones are mainly Hammer Springs and Kaikoura, and of course skiing, but we are not interested. Hammer Spring is also said to be a beautiful hot spring, but because I had already made up my mind to go to the famous hot spring in Rotorua on the North Island, I didn't go and just went to Kaikoura. July 8th Kaikoura-Picton-Wellington-Palmerston North No need to get up early from today! The people are liberated! We took the bus, the inter-island ferry, the ferry was really big! We arrived in the capital Wellington at 4:00 pm, but the Tao Jin brothers went directly Come get us and kill Palmerston North. On July 12, Palmerston North-Lake Taupo-Rotorua finally said goodbye to the 3-day rest period in Palmerston North. Tao Jin's car bumped badly, so he had to borrow Gu Wen's car. After a brief stop at Lake Taupo, I had lunch in the car by the lake, then went directly to Rotorua and took a hot spring bath. It is known as one of the top ten health spas in the world. By the way, the motel is very cheap, 85 for four people. Haha, I also saw the wonder of moving a house. Here in New Zealand, because there are fewer people and fewer cars, highways are usually one big and one road. People in New Zealand often move directly, so every time they move, they have to declare to the government. After the government approves, they start moving. On the highway, there will be a car in front of them. Put up a sign saying there is an oversized car passing behind them, to alert oncoming cars to pull over, and then you will see a large truck pulling a wooden house across the highway. Rotorua-Auckland on July 13. Stop watching Waitomo Caves and head directly to the geysers. The whole park is pretty good.
This is a geothermal area, and the air in Rotorua is filled with the smell of sulfur. Then I went to Auckland early and with the Taojin experience I beat the traffic and stayed in a holiday park. No wonder, who went back to Beijing on Saturday afternoon? Everything went smoothly. No one cares about the so-called customs declaration form of China Customs. The following is my experience during this trip to New Zealand: Clothing: New Zealand has a maritime climate, which is very pleasant. The average temperature is 10 degrees in winter and 20 degrees in summer. Therefore, although we went there during the coldest time, the most we could do was wear a cotton-padded jacket. There, there is basically no hope for Chinese food in the South Island; in the North Island, there are many people and there are many Chinese people, so there is still a chance to eat it. In short, eating is a big problem. If you can do it yourself, the average person can spend less than 10 dollars a day! The next restaurant will basically cost at least 70-80 dollars for four people.
Accommodation: In fact, four people are the best partners when going out to play, so food, accommodation and transportation are relatively affordable. In fact, the Motel that lives there costs 80-100 knives for two people and 100-120 knives for four people, which is much better. In peak season, it may rise by 15%. If you really want to save money and there are few people, stay at Backpackers. Generally speaking, the cost per person is over $20, but public restrooms and cooking facilities are often used.
