The Songhua River usually begins to freeze in mid-to-late November. Because it is located in the southern part of China's Heilongjiang Province and has a cold temperate continental monsoon climate, the weather during this period is cold and dry, causing the water on the river to gradually freeze and form a thick layer of ice. The freeze period lasts until the thaw begins in May of the following year.
