Zeng Guofan tells the story of reading
『一』In Zeng Guofan’s reading method, what are the two fables mentioned, and what do these two words mean?
Zeng Guofan believes that “Gaishi people read, The first is to have ambition, the second is to have knowledge, and the third is to have perseverance. If you have ambition, you will not be willing to be inferior; if you have knowledge, you will know that knowledge is endless, and you will not dare to be self-sufficient, just like a river boy looking at the sea, like a well frog peering into the sky. , are all ignorant; if there is perseverance, nothing can be accomplished. "Zeng Guofan's "Three Beings" are the key to reading. It means: To study, a scholar must have ambition (or ambition), secondly, he must have knowledge (or insight), and thirdly, he must have perseverance (or perseverance)
『二』Zeng Guopan when he was in school Story
Zeng Guofan, originally named Zicheng, Yu Bohan, later changed his name to Guofan and his nickname Disheng. Born on November 26, 1811 in Baiyangping, Xiangxiang County, Hunan Province, into a landlord family. His father was Zeng Lishu and his mother was Jiang. They had four daughters and five sons. Zeng Guofan was the eldest son.
It is said that the night before Zeng Guofan was born, his great-grandfather Zeng dreamed of a flying python descending from the sky. It first circled left and right in his courtyard, and then entered the inner courtyard and squatted there for a long time. So Zeng Jingxi woke up from his dream. Just as he was pondering the good or bad fortune of his dream, someone came to report that his granddaughter-in-law Jiang had given birth to a baby boy. The baby boy was Zeng Guofan.
Quite coincidentally, on the day Zeng Guofan was born, green vines grew behind the Zeng family house and twined around the tree. After the tree died, the vines became increasingly green and lush, providing shade for an acre, which is rare in the world. Its shape is very similar to the giant python in Zeng Jingxi's dream. When Zeng Guofan was successful, the vine flourished, but when he was frustrated, the vine also withered.
In addition, Zeng Guofan was born with a strange ringworm that would never heal. When the strange ringworm occurred, the pain and itching were unbearable. Zeng Guofan scratched it with both hands, and "lins" fell one after another.
All these weird things were put together and far-fetched, so there was a legend that Zeng Guofan was the reincarnation of the giant python.
Zeng Guofan has been studying in a private school taught by his father Zeng Linshu since he was seven years old. When he was twenty years old, he went out to study, successively at Tang's private school in Hengyang and Lianbin Academy in Xiangxiang. In 1833, 23-year-old Zeng Guofan took part in the imperial examination and became a scholar. At the end of the same year, he married Miss Ouyang.
In 1834, Zeng Guofan went to Sha Yuelu Academy, the highest school in Hunan, to study under Ouyang Houjun. He received a systematic Confucian education and was deeply influenced by Hunan's academic style. He passed the exam that year and set off for Beijing in the winter to prepare for the next year's exam. Unexpectedly, he failed in the exam. After returning to his hometown, Zeng Guofan studied history books diligently and stayed at home for nearly a year, which laid the foundation for his future official career and academic research. At the beginning of 1838, Zeng Guofan went to Beijing again to take the exam. His hard work paid off, and he finally got his wish and was awarded the thirty-eighth Jinshi. He got the first and second place in the imperial examination and was promoted to Shujishi. He went to the Hanlin Academy to further his studies. In 1840, when the Shujishi disbanded, he was ranked 19th in the second class and was awarded the Imperial Academy for review. From then on, Zeng Guofan began his twelve-year career as a Beijing official.
