The surname Yang comes from the royal family of the Western Zhou Dynasty after the Yellow Emperor. According to the "Compilation of Yuanhe Surnames" written by Lin Bao of the Tang Dynasty and the "Tongzhi Clan Brief" written by Zheng Qiao of the Song Dynasty, the surname Yang came from the surname Ji and originated from the State of Yang in the Jin Dynasty (now southeast of Hongdong County, Shanxi Province). Ji Song, King Cheng of the Western Zhou Dynasty, granted his younger brother Shuyu the territory in the southwest of present-day Shanxi Province, established his capital in Tang (today's west of Yicheng County, Shanxi Province), and made him the Marquis of Tang Dynasty.
Because the Tang Dynasty was close to the Jin River, it became the Jin (vassal) country, and Shuyu was the founding king of the Jin Dynasty. In the Spring and Autumn Period, the Jin Dynasty was in civil strife, and Duke Wu of Jin (the tenth grandson of Ji Xie, the ninth king of Yi in the Western Zhou Dynasty, a descendant of Shu Yu) destroyed the marquis and unified the Jin state. After Duke Wu died, his eldest son Guizhu succeeded him as Duke Xian of Jin. Duke Xian destroyed the surrounding small countries one after another, including Yang State. Xian Gong granted his second brother Boqiao the territory of Yang, and the surname was named Yang after the land. From then on, Boqiao became the ancestor of the Yang family, about 2,600 years ago.
