Deng Shichang's heroic stories are short.
1894, 17 In September, the Japanese fleet suddenly attacked the Chinese fleet, and a naval battle started. This is the Yellow Sea War. During the war, the flagship commander was injured and the flag was shot down. Deng Shichang immediately ordered the flag to be hoisted on his ship to attract enemy ships. The Zhiyuan ship he commanded was the most heroic in the battle. The front and rear guns volley and hit the Japanese ship again and again.
Surrounded by Japanese ships, Zhiyuan was seriously injured, began to tilt, and the shells were also exhausted. Deng Shichang felt that the last moment had come, so he said to his men, "Even if we die, we will lose the prestige of China's navy. It's time to serve the country! " He ordered the Japanese ship "Yoshino" to go ahead at full speed and die with it. This fearless spirit stunned the Japanese.

After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, due to the limited financial and material resources at that time, the tombs built by the people of Dalu Island for Deng Shichang and the unknown martyrs were very simple. 1988, donggang city people's government moved this tomb to the north slope of Nanshan in Dongkou. The people of Dalu Island made a new coffin for Zhiyuan's body. They chose the best wood and invited the best carpenter on the island to nail it. A monument was erected in front of the grave. The front of the tombstone is engraved with "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Wu Jia", and there is an inscription on the back of the tombstone.
Japanese entrepreneur Yukio Inoue made a special trip to Kashima and laid a wreath at the statue of Deng Shichang and the tomb of the "Heroes of the Sino-Japanese War". It is said that his grandfather participated in the Sino-Japanese naval battle as the first mate on a Japanese ship. He obeyed his grandfather's wishes and paid homage to the warriors in the Sino-Japanese War with a sense of guilt. The wreath reads: "May the Chinese and Japanese people be friendly for generations to come!"
