guò fèn shuǐ lǐng?

Fushuiling

wēn tíng yúntáng

Wen Tingyun Tang

xī shuǐ wú qíng sì yǒu qíng,

The stream is ruthless and seems to be sentimental,

rù shān sān rì dé tóng háng.

It takes three days to enter the mountain and you can travel with them.

lǐng tóu biàn shì fēn tóu chù,

Lingtou is the place where the head is divided,

xī bié chán yuán yī yè shēng.

I bid farewell to you all night long.

Translation:

The stream is ruthless but seems to have affection for me. I have been able to have it with me during my three days in the mountains.

The top of the mountain is where we parted ways. The gurgling water bid farewell to me all night long.

Transforming ruthless things into emotions is often an artistic method that makes ordinary things poetic and beautiful. This short poem by Wen Tingyun can illustrate this point very well.

The watershed described in the poem is a must-pass place for people between Qin, Shu or Qin and Liang. It was a famous traffic thoroughfare in the Tang Dynasty, so it is generally called the watershed instead of its location. The title is "Crossing the Watershed", but it actually writes about a relationship with the stream during the journey to cross the watershed, and the poetic feelings caused by it.
