The origin of the Grain Rain solar term:
Grain Rain means "rain produces hundreds of grains". It occurs every year on April 20 or 21 when the sun reaches 30° of the celestial longitude. "Collection of the Seventy-Two Hours of the Moon Order" says, "In the middle of March, after the rain, the soil paste pulsed, and now it rains the grain on the water... Covering the grain and planting seeds at this time is from bottom to top." Hence the name.
During Grain Rain season in the south, "poplars are all falling and their children are crowing", catkins are flying down, cuckoos are crowing at night, peonies are blooming, and cherries are red and ripe. The natural scenery tells people that it is late spring. At this time, the temperature in the south rises rapidly. Generally, the average temperature in late April, except for parts of northern and western South China, has reached 20°C to 22°C, which is more than 2°C higher than that in mid-April.
High temperatures above 30℃ often occur in eastern South China for one or two days, making people start to feel hot. The low-altitude river valleys are ready to enter summer.
In ancient my country, Grain Rain was divided into three periods: "The first period is when the duckweeds begin to grow; the second period is when the doves flutter their feathers; the third period is when Dai Ren falls on the mulberry trees." It refers to the amount of rainfall after the Grain Rain. The duckweeds began to grow, then the cuckoos began to remind people to plant seeds, and then the hoopoe began to be seen in the mulberry trees.
During Guyu, the high-altitude westerly jet stream in East Asia will once again weaken significantly and move northward. The warm and humid air masses in South China are more active, the westerly belt fluctuates more frequently from west to east, and the activities of low pressure and Jianghuai cyclones gradually increase. . Affected by this, there will be continuous rain or heavy storms in the Jianghuai region.
Grain Rain is the last solar term in spring. At this time, the seedlings in the fields are first planted and new crops are planted. They need the moisture of rain the most, so it is said that "spring rain is as precious as oil." At this time, most parts of southern my country have abundant rainfall in the east. The rainfall in late April is about 30 to 50 mm. The first heavy rain every year usually occurs during this time, which is beneficial to rice planting and the growth of corn and cotton seedlings. .
However, most of the rain in other areas of South China is less than 30 millimeters, so irrigation measures are needed to reduce the impact of drought. The northwest plateau and mountains are still in the dry season, with precipitation generally only 5 to 20 mm. The rainfall before and after Guyu in South China often "sneaks into the night with the wind, moistening things silently". This is because "Bashan night rain" has the greatest chance of appearing in April and May. "It often rains at night in Sichuan, and the river bank is already clear." This kind of rainy night and sunny weather during the day is quite suitable for the growth of spring crops and the harvest of early spring crops.
Most of the weather proverbs of the Grain Rain Festival revolve around the idea of rain or no rain, such as "Grain Rain is gloomy, Beginning of Summer is drenched with rain", "Grain Rain rains, but there is no dry soil for forty-five days" and so on. In addition, during the Grain Rain solar term, if the temperature is high and the rain is frequent, the three wheat diseases and insect pests will occur and spread. The vast number of rural areas should do a good job in preventing and controlling three wheat diseases and insect pests according to weather changes.
