Functions and uses of progesterone
Fetal protection
Progesterone can promote the growth of endometrial glands, and the endometrium is congested and thickened, which is beneficial to fertilization. After conception, progesterone can reduce uterine contraction during pregnancy and make the fetus grow safely. If there is maternal luteal insufficiency, abortion should be sought first, and progesterone should be supplemented appropriately.
Luteal support for in vitro fertilization
During IVF, luteal support is also very important, mainly used after transplantation. Due to the down regulation of pituitary gland, luteal cells left in ovary after egg retrieval lack hormone stimulation, and their ability to secrete estrogen and progesterone decreases, so it is necessary to supplement enough progesterone from outside for luteal support to maintain pregnancy.
Three usages
Progesterone is divided into three forms: intramuscular injection, vaginal administration and oral administration: 1, intramuscular injection of progesterone, usually with a dose of 20- 100mg/ day. 2. Vaginal progesterone: progesterone sustained-release gel 90mg/ day; 300-800 mg/day of micronized progesterone capsules (taken 3-4 times). 3. Oral progesterone: the effective dose is 10-20mg/ day.
