Why should shallots be seeded?

Spring and autumn are the main production seasons. At low temperature, spring and autumn can be used for bolting, flowering and fruiting under long sunshine, and offspring can be propagated by seeds or vegetative plants. In production, bolting and flowering should be avoided except for seeds, so as to improve the yield and quality of green onions.

After bolting, it means that onion officially enters the reproductive growth stage, the number of onion leaves no longer increases, a lot of nutrients are used for reproduction, onion leaves and onion white tissue slowly age and lose their edible value, so for onion without seeds, it loses its commercial value.

So why do the planted shallots bolt, blossom and seed ahead of time?

After flowering and seed setting of Chinese onion, plant tissues become old, fiber content increases, and commodity value will be lost. The main reasons for the early bolting of shallots are that the seeds or seedlings of shallots have passed vernalization at low temperature, the seeds are stored for too long, the seeds are sown too early in early spring, and the plants are weakened by extensive management and high temperature and drought, which will all lead to the early bolting of shallots. Therefore, strengthening this measure can effectively prevent the early bolting, flowering and fruiting of shallots, and improve the quality of shallots.

Measures to prevent early bolting of scallion;

1, the selection of seeds should be appropriate: as analyzed earlier, seeds stored for too long will reduce their vitality and shallots will easily age. In order to complete reproductive breeding, they will enter the reproductive stage in advance, bolting, flowering and fruiting early. Therefore, when sowing, we should choose new seeds from the previous year instead of old seeds stored for too long, which is the most direct and effective method to prevent onion seedlings.

2. Sowing at the right time: Spring and autumn are the main production seasons of shallots, especially in spring, when sowing is too early, the temperature is high and low, and the seedlings are prone to vernalization due to low temperature. When the temperature rises gradually, early bolting will occur under the condition of long sunshine. If bolting buds are not pinched off in time and allowed to develop, they will blossom, seed and grow. Sowing in autumn is too early, and the seedlings are too big before winter, so the early bolting rate will be high. Therefore, sowing late at the appropriate sowing date can prevent early bolting.

3. Strengthen field management. If the management of shallots is extensive and the fertilizer and water can't keep up, the plant growth will be weakened. In case of high temperature and drought, shallots will be transferred to reproductive growth in advance, bolting in advance and flowering and fruiting. Therefore, in management, according to the growth status of shallots and the dryness of the soil, timely and appropriate topdressing and watering, supplementing nutrients and keeping the soil moist can promote the vigorous growth of plants and carry out nutritional growth.
