In March of the 38th year of the Republic of China (1949), the "Three Tang Mergers" belonged to the 11th District of Tanghe County (the district office was located in Qiyi and was once located in Zhangmadian).
In February 1956, it belonged to the two central townships of Qiyi and Itacang. In December of the same year, it was designated as Qiyi District, governing the two townships of Qiyi and Itacang.
The Qiyi People's Commune was established in October 1958, with jurisdiction over the current Qiyi Township, Ma Zhenfu Township and the southern village committee of Zangang Township.
In May 1961, it was designated as Qiyi District, with jurisdiction over seven people's communes: Qiyi, Zhangmadian, Zhougang, Shizhushan, Dashuli, Ma Zhenfu and Niuzhai.
