Illiterate tomb robbers have no trouble finding ancient tombs, so why can’t educated archaeologists?
Our Chinese history is indeed too long, and in this winding history, countless powerful figures have been born. Since he is a master, he will naturally not be like us common people after death. He must be buried in a grand manner, equipped with gold, silver and jewelry, so that the owner of the tomb can continue to enjoy it underground. However, the deceased could not take away this wealth, so the profession of tomb robbers came into being.
As the times continue to this day, the business of tomb robbing is still passed down in the hands of some people, and archaeological experts who created it to protect cultural relics hate it. In our impression, tomb robbers often have the upper hand and leave empty shells for archaeological experts. Is this really the case? Let’s analyze it carefully:
1. The imbalance in quantity. Regarding tomb robbers, there were once rumors circulating on the Internet that there are hundreds of thousands of tomb robbers in China, and this does not include those temporary and part-time tomb robbers. Although the statement is a bit exaggerated, it is enough to reflect the number of tomb robbers. The training cycle for archaeological experts is much longer, and it often takes several years or even decades to cultivate a unique talent. Therefore, under the overwhelming numbers, archaeological experts who take the elite route are naturally unable to cope with the challenges of tomb robbers.
2. Feng Shui. Feng Shui is a set of things that have been passed down from our ancestors to today. Many things have been lost. What’s more important is that many people don’t believe in it, including scientific archaeological experts (of course, this only refers to the vast majority). Grave robbers with little education often like to study Feng Shui. Even if you take a step back, Feng Shui is really superstitious, but you can't resist the ancients' belief! The positioning of their tombs is based on Feng Shui, and you can often do wonders if you follow the diagram.
For example, Yao Yuzhong, who was arrested two years ago and is known as the "Grandmaster of Tomb Robbers," has been involved in the tomb robbing industry for more than 30 years. He has robbed more than 200 tombs without missing a beat, and the amount involved has reached 500 million. He claimed to be able to observe the sky at night and look at Qi and determine acupoints. However, everyone finally discovered that this guy had an elementary school education and could not even recognize the words. However, he had liked to study Feng Shui since he was a child, so Feng Shui is indeed a great tool for finding tombs. !
3. Inheritance issues. Tomb robbing can be traced back to Wu Zixu in the late Spring and Autumn Period. After thousands of years of inheritance, there are naturally some secrets of tomb robbing that are unknown to outsiders. Like the well-known Luoyang soil shoveling, there must still be people who have this ability today. The field of archeology has not been around for long, and the accumulation of experience is still shallow.
4. Time issue. Tomb robbers have existed in every dynasty, and many tombs were targeted within a few days of being excavated. It is extremely convenient for them to commit crimes. When archaeological experts open the tomb thousands of years later, the tomb will naturally be empty! Of course, we list so many things not to belittle experts, but to illustrate that the archeology department has various irreversible disadvantages, which creates the illusion that "archaeological experts are not as good as tomb robbers". Our current archeology uses various high technologies, such as remote sensing, geomagnetism, sonar and other equipment, and we also have a thorough understanding of the conditions of the tombs.
