Extended reading: Wang Wei's poetry style
Wang Wei's attainments in painting are as high as his attainments in poetry. He once wrote in the "Lao Lai" chapter of "Occasionally Composed": "I was a poet in my previous life, and my predecessor was a painter." He is known for both poetry and painting. Not many of his paintings are extant, but according to other people's evaluation of him ( For example, "Fengshi Hearing and Seeing Notes" says that he has "specially wonderful landscapes and profound depths that have never been seen in recent times." "Chun Tian Ji" says that his "paintings are unparalleled in ancient and modern times.") Considering the fact of the Kainan School of Painting, This shows that his achievements in this area are extraordinary.
He is also very good at music. "Ji Yi Ji" says that when he was young, in order to get the help of a certain princess, he secretly assigned him to be the head of the department. Playing the new pipa song "Yulun Robe", he was appreciated by the princess and won his head. These are of course legends and not very credible. However, one thing is still credible: if he didn't understand music, it would be difficult for him to produce such a thing. The legend shows that he knows music.
During the prosperous Tang Dynasty, Wang Weisheng was influenced by the splendid culture and art at that time, and had high artistic and musical accomplishments. Therefore, when he wrote poetry, he was bound to be more precise, detailed, and precise than ordinary poets. Grasp the wonderful scenery and magical sounds of nature and express them. He is also good at using words and colors, and pays more attention to the harmony of poetry tones. In this way, the author's unique poetic artistic style of "pictures within poems" was virtually formed. The formation of Wang Wei's poetic style is also inseparable from the influence he received from the works of outstanding writers of the previous generation. Some of his poems are rich and simple, deeply influenced by the artistic style of "Guofeng". He used the themes in "Historical Records" as poems without losing the generous and tragic feeling of the original works. Among them, I think the ones that had the greatest influence on him were none other than "Chu Ci" and Tao Yuanming.
Wang Wei not only adopted the form of "Chu Ci", developed its artistic conception, and created "Song of Climbing the Tower", "Song of Seeing Friends Returning to the Mountain", and many other Sao style poems, which are his modern style poems. Like "Jiaoyuan" and "Farewell", the poems in "Mountain" are exquisite in state, deeply affectionate and full of sad thoughts. The influence of "Chu Ci" (especially "Nine Songs") can also be vaguely discerned. .
In Wang Wei's poems, Tao Yuanming often describes himself. "Houshan Shihua" also said: "Youcheng and Suzhou both learned from Tao, and the king felt at home." This shows his admiration for Tao Yuanming and Tao Yuanming's influence on him. Wang Wei was a successful pastoral landscape poet after Tao Yuanming. They all love nature and have a peaceful and tranquil mood. Their styles are all unified and elegant, but their poems are also very different.
The most significant ones are: Tao's poems focus on white description, while Wang's poems are good at color painting; although Tao's poems are good at describing scenes, they mostly express life feelings; although Wang's poems blend scenes, they still focus on description of scenery. Among his contemporaries, Wang Wei's Those with similar poetry styles include Meng Haoran, Zu Yong, Lu Xiang, Qiu Wei, etc. These people were all friends of Wang Wei. Because they had the same interests and were good at describing natural scenery, they formed a school in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Among them, Wang Wei and Meng Haoran certainly had the greatest literary achievements, so they are known as both Wang and Meng. However, there are also significant stylistic differences between Wang and Meng's poems. And in terms of the impression given to people, Wang's poems appear richer and more lively, while Meng's poems appear more delicate and less interesting. If we ask about overall achievements, Meng's poems are not as good as Wang's poems.
