A brief introduction to the history of Baiyun Mountain
Baiyun Mountain has been visited by people as early as the Warring States Period. Historically, Baiyun Mountain was a geomantic treasure land where Buddhist and Taoist temples gathered. There are as many as ten temples preserved or built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including Baiyun Temple, Shuangxi Temple, Nengren Temple, Maitreya Temple, Lianquan Temple, Purun Temple, Shangjingtai Temple, Xiajingtai Temple, Wulonggu Temple, and Yunyan Temple. .
Baiyun Mountain has a long cultural heritage and profound historical deposits. There are remains of the Neolithic Age in Huangpo Cave at the foot of Baiyun Mountain. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, An Qisheng, a native of Qi, came to the south to live in seclusion, collecting medicine to help the world, and dedicated his life to it. Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, more famous poets such as Du Shenyan, Song Zhixiang, Han Yu, Li Shangyin, Li Qunyu, Su Dongpo, Yang Wanli, Li Angying, etc. have visited Guangdong to climb mountains and write poems during their tours. Local literati Chen Baisha, Chen Zizhuang, Qu Dajun, Zhang Weiping, etc. came here to gather and form societies to recite poems and compose poems. Their poems and essays have become valuable heritage of Lingnan history and culture.
The profound historical accumulation of Baiyun Mountain is unique among Lingnan scenic spots. Especially in the modern history of China, it has experienced the baptism of major events such as the Opium War, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and the Revolution of 1911, and records the footprints of famous figures such as the Anti-French War, the Sino-Japanese War of 1894, and the Northern Expedition. Has great historical value.
The older generation of revolutionaries Dong Biwu, Zhu De and Guo Moruo once wrote poems and inscriptions for Baiyun Mountain. Zhou Enlai and Chen Yi once conducted state activities here.
