History of Zen 139: Sanping Yizhong
Zen master Sanping Yizhong is the most proud disciple of Zen master Dadian. In the era when Zen master Yizhong lived, there were many masters. In the whole Zen Jianghu, Yi Zhong Zen Master is far less famous than others in the same period, such as Weishan Lingyou, Huangbai Xiyun, Daowu Yuanzhi, Dacihuanzhong, Zhaozhou Congpatent, Changsha Jingcen, etc. However, Yi Zhong Zen Master still won a great reputation for himself by virtue of his excellent Zen kung fu, and then in southern Fujian, few Zen masters can outshine him.
There are two different versions of the loyalty word in the dharma name of Zen master Yizhong in the existing materials. I once asked Wang Yan, a Zen master in Yizhong, that the Buddhist name of Yizhong was written in the Inscription of Master Sanping in Zhangzhou (Parallel Preface) and the Record of the Patriarch of Guangji in Sanping in Zhangzhou.
However, loyalty is written in all Zen classics, including Zutang Collection, Jingde Chuandeng Record, Lian Deng Hui Yao, Wu Deng Hui Yuan and so on.
In this regard, this paper also writes loyalty according to numerous Zen classics. First, it corresponds to many Zen classics to avoid misunderstanding. Secondly, in ancient times, "zhong" and "zhong" were universal.
Zen master Yi Zhong's laity surname is Yang, and his ancestral home is in Xi 'an, Shaanxi Province. However, since his father was appointed as an official in Fuqing, Fujian Province when he was young, Zen master Yi Zhong's father came to Fuqing City to work and get married. In this way, Zen master Yizhong was born in Fuqing City in 781 AD.
when Zen master Yizhong was born, white light filled the whole house, and everyone in the family felt very magical.
Besides, Zen Master Yi Zhong has never liked spicy things since he was born, and his family doesn't know why. No way, the family had to let Zen master Yizhong be a vegetarian every day.
when Zen master Yizhong was fourteen years old, his father was transferred to work in Shangqiu city, Henan province, and Zen master Yizhong naturally followed him to Shangqiu, but for some reason, Zen master Yizhong, who was born in an official family, actually came to lawyer Xuan Yong to become a monk.
At the age of twenty-seven, Zen Master Yizhong received a foot ring, thus becoming a formal monk.
During the thirteen years when Zen Master Yi Zhong became a monk with lawyer Xuan Yong, Zen Master Yi Zhong was hundred schools of thought, who not only learned a subset of Confucian classics and history, but also became proficient in Zhouyi. Of course, for his family's Buddhism, Zen master Yizhong naturally studied hard, and he kept on practicing Buddhism.
One day, when Zen Master Yi Zhong was looking through the scriptures, he saw a book "The Words of Zen Buddhism", so Zen Master Yi Zhong took it and read it. When Zen Master Yi Zhong saw the book "No nocturnal travel, you must arrive at the scene", Zen Master Yi Zhong couldn't help but feel very surprised. This kind of words was unheard of by himself.
Zen master Yizhong, who was very proficient in Zhouyi, couldn't help saying, "The Book of Changes? In the tenth chapter of the copula upload, it is also said that' only God is there, so it is not quick, but it can't be done'. " It seems that the Zen words of the Zen masters have something in common with Zhouyi. However, although Zen master Yizhong vaguely realized something, he couldn't say why.
It seems that only by consulting the Zen masters who eat professional food can I understand the key.
Therefore, Zen Master Yizhong immediately shouldered a small burden and joined the army that was roaming the rivers and lakes at that time.
If you want to find a Zen master to solve your doubts, you must find a master.
Therefore, Zen Master Yizhong first came to learn from Zen Master Zhang Jinghuai Hui, then came to Xitang Zhizang Zen Master and then came to learn from Zen Master Baizhang Huaihai.
After studying with these three masters for ten years, Zen Master Yizhong came to the Jianghu again. When Zen master Yizhong heard that Zen master Huizang's "Shigong bow and arrow" was unusually sharp, few people in the Jianghu could resist it, he couldn't help but disagree.
With ten years' experience with Zen master Huaihai and others, Zen master Yizhong confidently came to visit Zen master Huizang at Shigongshan Stone Gong Temple in Yihuang County, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province.
when Zen master Huizang saw someone coming to challenge him, he still aimed his bow and arrow at the bearer, and then shouted, "Look at the arrow."
Zen master Yizhong studied with top experts for ten years, and naturally he still has some kung fu.
Seeing Zen master Huizang stretching his bow and holding an arrow, Zen master Yizhong jerked his skirt to expose his chest and came out to face the bow and arrow. Then he said to Zen master Huizang, "This is a killing arrow. What is the living arrow for?"
when Zen master Huizang saw it, he didn't say anything, but reached out and played the bowstring three times with one finger.
As soon as Zen master Yizhong saw it, he immediately tidied up his clothes, and then gave a gift of thanks to Zen master Huizang.
Zen master Huizang sighed, "I've been holding an arrow for 3 years, but I didn't expect to shoot only half a saint today." After that, Master Huizang broke the bow and arrow.
Although Zen Master Yizhong resisted Shi Gong's bow and arrow for a while, he still thought that Zen Master Huizang's bow and arrow skills were a bit unique and wonderful, so he stayed in Shigong Temple to study with Zen Master Huizang for a while, and then left Shigong Temple to wander the Jianghu.
When Master Yizhong heard that Master Dadian was in full swing at Lingshan Temple in Jianghu, he couldn't help but be moved. Because I have been studying Hongzhou Buddhism for many years, I don't know much about Stone Buddhism. So Zen master Yizhong decided to meet Zen master Diandian and see how Shi Zong's Zen method was.
After a long journey, Master Yizhong came to visit Master Dadian at Lingshan Temple in Tongmeng Town, Chaoyang District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province.
As soon as they met, Zen Master Yizhong said rudely, "Don't point to the east and west, please point it out."
Zen master Yizhong dared to say such things in front of Zen master Diandian, because he had a little effort. That's why he said to Zen master Diandian, I'm also a colleague, so you don't have to say those pleasantries and pleasantries. Now that you've started your apprenticeship, show me some real kung fu.
Seeing that Zen Master Yizhong came to investigate and argue himself menacingly, Zen Master Dadian said calmly, "You Zhou Jiangkou Stone Man Squats."
Zen master Yizhong said disapprovingly, "Jude refers to drawing east and west."
master dadian said, "if it's a phoenix, don't ask the fence."
Upon hearing this, Zen Master Yizhong immediately tidied up his clothes and respectfully thanked Zen Master Dadian.
Master Diandian said, "If you can't make a later statement, it's hard to make a final statement."
For this case, Zen master Yuanwu Keqin, the first master of Zen in Song Dynasty, commented and sang:
Thoroughly care for your wife, and don't ask for it from there.
father and son want to speculate.
Seeing the magic of Zen master Dadian, Zen master Yizhong told the story of his confrontation with Shi Gonghui Zang.
After hearing this, Master Diandian asked, "Since it is a living arrow, why do you argue with the bowstring?"
when Zen master Yizhong heard this, he immediately didn't know how to answer.
Seeing that the kung fu that I learned after studying outside for many years was not used by Master Dadian, Master Yizhong decided to stay in Lingshan Temple and study the Zen course of Shitouzong with Master Dadian.
One day, Master Dadian said to Master Yizhong, "Take off your armor."
When he saw Master arguing about himself, Zen Master Yizhong immediately stepped back and stood up.
There are many layers of "armor" on people's bodies and hearts. Naturally, they need to be removed, and even they have to be removed. But for those who can't unload, what else can they unload? Therefore, Zen master Yizhong had to retire and stand.
Seeing that his students have such understanding, Master Diandian was very happy.
After studying with Master Dadian for several years, Master Yizhong finally bid farewell to Master with a diploma from Lingshan Temple Buddhist College.
in 825 ad, Zen master Yizhong traveled all the way to Zhangzhou city, Fujian province. Zen master Yizhong saw that the geomantic omen in Zhishan here was good, so he went into the mountain and created a "Sanpingzhen Courtyard" on the mountain behind Kaiyuan Temple to live in Buddhism.
Zen master Yizhong studied in the Zen Jianghu at that time, and had a deep study and understanding of the Zen methods of Hongzhou Sect and Shitou Sect, the two largest sects at that time, so his Zen methods were naturally excellent.
Therefore, it didn't take long for Zen Master Yizhong's Sanping True Academy to attract many Jianghu people to climb mountains and wade to exchange views and arguments, and as many as 3 monks lived there.
on this day, Zen master Yizhong suddenly developed a poisonous sore on his back. Zen master Yizhong felt a little uncomfortable, so he immediately shut himself in the abbot's room and stayed indoors for seven days and seven nights, and did not communicate with others.
The disciples of Zen Master Yizhong are naturally very anxious, but there is nothing they can do.
On the eighth day, Zen Master Yizhong finally opened the door and came out by himself, but the poisonous sore on his back had healed.
Not long after, someone came to the temple and told Zen Master Yizhong that his mother had died. Hearing this, Zen Master Yizhong immediately went to the abbot's room and then shut the door tightly. This is another seven days and seven nights. Not only that, but during these seven days and seven nights, Zen master Yizhong didn't eat a mouthful of rice and drink a drop of water.
But when Zen Master Yizhong came out, he looked as usual, but nothing happened.
In the fifth year of Huichang, in 845 AD, the Buddhist extermination campaign launched by Li Yan in Tang Wuzong reached its peak, and a large number of monasteries in China were demolished and their properties confiscated. Most monks were forced to return to the secular world or were arrested and killed.
Zen master Yizhong, who was thousands of miles away and presided over Sanping Zhenyuan, which belonged to a remote area at that time, keenly captured a trace of danger, and he felt that his temple could not escape the fate of being demolished.
Of course, if the temple is demolished, it can be rebuilt, but if the monks are arrested and killed, it will be difficult.
So, in order to avoid the damage of the imperial court, Zen Master Yizhong led a group of disciples into the deep mountain of Sanping Mountain in advance, and then established a Sanping Temple in a place called Jiuceng Rock for everyone to live and practice.
Two years later, Tang Xuanzong Li Chen succeeded to the throne and began to vigorously restore Buddhism throughout the country. Many Zen masters who had been hidden for many years returned to the mountains to preach Buddhism.
But Zen Master Yizhong remained unmoved and continued to practice in the mountains.
At this time, the largest number of Zen schools in the Jianghu is Yang Zong, and the winner of the French seats in many temples in the world is Tongqing Temple, the Zen master of Ling Ling.
Tanzo in Xiyuan is also an outstanding student under Mazu Road, and he is also a famous person in the Jianghu.
Since Mazu and Zen Master Xi Qian, wandering around the Jianghu has become a fashion. Therefore, it has become a compulsory course for monks in temples all over the country to go out and walk in rivers and lakes alone or in groups.
Among the many people who walk in the Jianghu, dozens of monks under the door of Zen Master Lingyou and the door of Tanzang in Xiyuan have somehow gathered together to travel in a group. Among them, a monk named Huang, a layman, is known as "Huang Dakou" because of his mastery of Buddhism, good Zen skills and eloquence. Naturally, this yellow mouth has become the leader of this team.
On this day, Huang Dakou and his party heard in the Jianghu that Yizhong Zen Master in Zhangzhou had some kung fu skills, so they came to Sanpingshan together to discuss Zen with Yizhong Zen Master.
When Zen master Yizhong saw Huang Dakou coming, he asked, "Is that you, the famous Huang Dakou in the Jianghu?"
Huang Dakou immediately said modestly, "I dare not, I dare not."
Zen master Yizhong continued to ask, "What's the size of your mouth?" Since you claim to have a big mouth, what is the size of your mouth?
Huang Dakou immediately said, "The whole body is the mouth." It seems that this yellow mouth has the ability to argue at any time, and it has the spirit of swallowing the world.
Zen master Yizhong hit the nail on the head and said, "Where do you want to go?" Since you are full of words, where are you going? It seems that Huang Dakou is a little forgetful.
When Huang Dakou heard this, he was stunned and didn't find the right words to deal with it.
Although other monks were disciples of Zen Master Ling You and Zen Master Tan Zang, they were asked by Zen Master Yi Zhong when they saw Huang Dakou's words. Naturally, no one dared to jump out and challenge Zen Master Yi Zhong.
The news that Zen master Yizhong defeated Huang Dakou, a small and famous player in the Jianghu, immediately aroused great repercussions in the Jianghu. Everyone admired Zen master Yizhong's sharp front. As a result, many people who have learned Buddhism and Taoism have come to Sanping Mountain to learn from Master Yizhong.
Zheng Xun, the head of Zhangzhou City, was even more happy when he heard about it. Originally, Zen master Yizhong had a good reputation in the local area, and now he defeated Huang Dakou, which added a story of the French war to the local area and added luster to the local area.
So Zheng Xun immediately went to the mountain and respectfully invited Zen Master Yizhong to come down to preside over Kaiyuan Temple, the largest temple in Zhangzhou. In this way, Zen master Yizhong officially preached the Dharma again.
in 849 ad, Zheng Xun played the deeds of Zen master Yizhong to the imperial court, hoping that the imperial court could give Zen master Yizhong a legal name.
after receiving the memorial, Tang Xuanzong Li Chen immediately wrote the edict of "Guangji" with Zen master Yizhong.
At this time, the Yizhong Zen Master had the name of the emperor, the strong support of local leaders, the largest Kaiyuan Temple in the local area as the base for teaching Buddhism, and excellent Zen Kung Fu. It can be said that it was the right time, the right place and everything, and the scenery in Zhangzhou was the same for a while. Naturally, for this kind of character, Jianghu people will flock to it.
on this day, Zen master Yizhong came to the class and said to his classmates, "When you come out today, you will learn to do your best, and you will take it as your own eyes. What is the corresponding time?" Ah, if you want to learn, don't worry about it. You have your own duties. Why don't you take it? Why are you angry and angry? What's the benefit? If you want to practice the road and establish the door of enlightenment, you have your own Tibetan religion. If it's something in the clan, you should not be wrong. "
It seems that the content of Zen master Yizhong's lecture still emphasizes the duty of Zen.
A student immediately stood up and asked, "Is there any way to learn?"
People have gone to great lengths to come here. You have to show everyone where to go.
Zen master Yizhong said, "It's as slippery as moss all the way." It seems that Zen master Yizhong still preserves the wind of "slippery stone road" of Zen master Xi Qian.
The student immediately asked, "Are you still allowed to creep?" It seems that this student knows that the stone road is slippery and wants to go up and take a walk.
Zen master Yizhong said, "If you don't mind, look for yourself."
On this day, Zen Master Yizhong said to his classmates, "If you have never seen knowledge, you must. If you have ever seen the author, you should get some ideas and eat grass and clothes from the rocks, so it is less appropriate to go there." If you are eager to learn, you will understand the meaning of the sentence, that is, Wan Li is eager to go to the countryside. Take care. "
The words "Yi Zhong Zen Master" have the feeling that the Zen master is helpless, and have the meaning that a Zen guest lives in a mountain forest.
At that time, Wang Yan, assistant minister of the Ministry of Rites, was demoted to Zhangzhou because he was involved in other people's affairs. On this day, he also came to Kaiyuan Temple to ask the Buddhist monk Yi Zhong for advice.
Wang sarcastically asked, "What do black beans do before they sprout?"
Zen master Yizhong said, "All Buddhas don't know."
Wang satirized the answer to Zen master Yizhong, and naturally he was at a loss.
Seeing that Wang sarcastically couldn't understand his own words, Zen Master Yizhong immediately wrote a poem.
