Summary of Jane Eyre Chapters 26 and 27
Chapter 26 Summary: The next morning, Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester went to church together. Jane Eyre didn't know whether the weather was good or bad, and she only thought about Mr. Rochester. They entered the church and the wedding took place as scheduled. While the priest was speaking to them, an uninvited guest came in and stopped the wedding from proceeding. He said that Rochester married Mason's sister Bertha Mason 15 years ago. Rochester admitted this fact and led people to Thornfield House to see the mad woman imprisoned on the third floor. At that time, Jane Eyre was among them, and she didn't know what to do after learning about it. Suddenly he remembered that his uncle had left him a legacy, so he decided to leave Thornfield House and Mr. Rochester.
Summary of Chapter 27: On the afternoon of the wedding day, Jane Eyre left the room. She found Rochester sitting on a chair by the door waiting for her. After the two talked, Rochester confessed to Jane Eyre that the reason for marrying the mad woman was his father's uneven distribution of property, and expressed his love for Jane Eyre. But Jane Eyre has decided to leave. Out of her own self-esteem, she is unwilling to become Rochester's nominal mistress. The next day, she simply packed up and left Thornfield.
