Is Wuhan one of China’s three great furnaces?

In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in my country, there is a high-temperature area in summer, such as Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing. The highest daily temperature exceeds 35°C for more than 20 days a year, and there are times above 40°C. The weather is hot, so people also call these three cities the "three furnaces".

my country's current extreme highest temperature record of 49.6°C was observed in my country's hot pole Turpan Basin on July 13, 1975. However, the area here is small, the population is small, and it is hot but not stuffy. Therefore, the hottest summer of the year has the greatest impact on the lives and work of our people not in Turpan, but in the vast and populous Yangtze River Basin. During the high temperature period in summer, there are three most famous "big furnaces": Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing.

Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing are indeed very hot. The average temperature in July is around 33℃, and the extreme maximum temperature has reached 41.3~44℃. The high temperature lasts for a long time It is also very long. The average number of hot summer days above 30℃ is more than 70 days every year, and the temperature does not change much from morning to night. It is not only hot during the day, but also unbearably hot at night.

The main reason for the formation of the three big furnaces along the Yangtze River is that the upper air is controlled by the subtropical high pressure zone in summer; the second is the influence of terrain. Chongqing, Wuhan and Nanjing are all in the Yangtze River valley with a lower altitude. The terrain of the valley is like the bottom of a pot. It is surrounded by mountains. It is difficult to dissipate heat from the ground, causing the temperature to rise. Third, these places are densely covered with paddy fields and have a lot of water vapor. High humidity makes it difficult for the human body to evaporate after sweating, and the heat dissipation efficiency of sweating is greatly reduced. High temperature and high humidity make people feel stuffy.

Actually, these three stoves are not too hot. Judging from the number of days with high temperatures above 35℃, along the Yangtze River, Anqing has 20 days and Hangzhou has 21.9 days, both more than Nanjing; Jiujiang has 25 days and Huangshi has 25.6 days, which are also more than Wuhan; Fuling has 36.4 days and Wanxian has 36.4 days. There are 36.9 days, which is also higher than Chongqing. There are even more high-temperature "stoves" outside the Yangtze River coast. For example, Guixi in Jiangxi had 42.7 hot days, Hengyang in Hunan had 42.9 days, and Kaixian in Sichuan had 41.6 days.

So why are Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing called the three "furnaces"? Maybe it's because they are well-known big cities and have been promoted by many literati in history.
