Haining City is located in the northeast of Zhejiang Province, south of Jiaxing City, on the southern edge of the Hangjiahu Plain in the Yangtze River Delta, and on the north bank of the Qiantang River. It is a famous historical and cultural city and one of the top 100 counties in the country. In 2008, it ranked 21st. The geographical coordinates are 30°15’-30°35’ north latitude and 120°18’-120°52’ east longitude. It borders Haiyan County to the east, Qiantang River to the south, faces Shangyu City of Shaoxing City and Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou City across the river, Yuhang District of Hangzhou City to the west, and Tongxiang City and Xiuzhou District of Jiaxing City to the north. The city governs Haizhou Street. It is 125 kilometers east of Shanghai. The Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway and the 01 Provincial Highway Hangzhou-Shanghai double track run across the city from east to west. The Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway, Hangzhou-Puzhou Expressway and National Highway 320 cross the northern border, and the east line of the Hangzhou Ring Road runs through the west. With the main framework of "two horizontals and six verticals", city, town and village roads are crisscrossed and extend in all directions. There are 46 graded inland waterways, and the main waterways are connected to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
The city is located in the Hangjiahu Plain of the Yangtze River Delta, with an inland area of 699.92 square kilometers, of which plains account for 87.94%, hills account for 1.81%, and waters account for 10.25%. The terrain is long and narrow, 51.65 kilometers long from east to west and 28.94 kilometers wide from north to south. The terrain is flat, sloping from southwest to northeast, with a ground elevation of 4 to 8 meters (Wusong elevation. The same below). The remaining islets and low hills of the ancient land are concentrated in the northeast and southeast of the country. Gaoyang Mountain is the highest, with an altitude of 253.3 meters, and the others are below 200 meters.
Haining belongs to the northern subtropical marine humid climate zone, with a mild climate, abundant rainfall, sufficient sunshine, and four distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is 15.9°C, the average annual rainfall is 1187 mm, the sunshine is 2002.9 hours, and the frost-free period is 233.5 days. Because it is located at mid-latitudes, warm and cold air often meet here, causing droughts, floods, winds and other disastrous weather. The soil of the cultivated land is sandy in the south and sticky in the north. It has good structure, coordinated water and air, and moderate pH, which is suitable for the growth of a variety of crops.
Haining belongs to the water network zone of the Taihu Lake Basin. There are two water systems in the territory, the Shangtang River and the Canal. The total length of the river is 1865.4 kilometers, and the river network rate is 5.1%. The water resources are mainly river runoff, with a high utilization rate of external water and controlled exploitation of groundwater. The total water resources are 662 million cubic meters, which can meet the needs of industrial and agricultural production and people's lives. Haining is located on the north bank of the Qiantang River estuary, with a coastline of 55.92 kilometers and a water area of 21,730 hectares. The seawall is 53.6 kilometers long, accounting for 33.5% of the total length of the seawalls on the north bank. "Haining Tide" is a world-famous natural landscape. The river near Dajianshan in Huangwan Town is the starting point of the "Haining Tide". It is famous for Dingqiao's "meeting tide", Yanguan's "first-line tide" and Xincang's "turning tide".
