Is the Henan Plain suitable for growing walnuts? How is the income?

Walnut trees do very well in most areas of Henan.

Because of Henan’s precipitation, frost-free period, minimum temperature, and soil environment, most areas are very suitable for the growth needs of fine northern walnut varieties.

I received news from Puyang yesterday that the Liaohe No. 1 walnut orchard of more than 100 acres is 3-4 years old. The main variety "Liaohe No. 1" is planted. The total output this year is estimated to be about 25,000 kilograms. This issue is also explained.

However, it should also be noted that in the southwestern region, attention should be paid to disease prevention and the planting density should be appropriately reduced, because the precipitation in this area is relatively high.

Therefore, except for low-lying land and saline-alkali land that are not suitable for walnut planting, most areas in Henan are suitable for walnut tree planting.

The walnut planting method is as follows:

1. Choose soil quality to plant walnuts

Walnut is a kind of seedling that has low land requirements and can grow on the land. Walnut seedlings can be grown on such land with any weeds and trees. If nothing grows, you cannot plant walnut seedlings. Any walnut will have no effect on altitude and temperature. For example, in Lhasa, Xinjiang, Gansu, etc., the altitude is more than 6,000 meters, and it can grow normally at more than minus 30 degrees, such as in tropical areas. The growth of Hainan walnuts is normal.

2. Improved varieties and strong seedlings

Selecting good varieties is the key to ensuring walnut yield and quality. Seedlings should grow robustly, free from pests, diseases, and mechanical damage, with intact root systems, full terminal buds, and a high degree of lignification.

3. Planting Season

Planting time is divided into spring planting and autumn planting. Spring planting: Planting can be done after the soil thaws and before the seedlings germinate. Drought weather is prone to occur in our city in spring, so special attention should be paid to irrigation after planting to improve the planting survival rate; Autumn planting: is the main planting season in our city, usually from late October to the end of December. At this time, the soil moisture is sufficient, the temperature in the soil layer is high, and the root system is still active, which can recover wounds and slow down the seedlings early, which can not only greatly improve the survival rate of planting, but also ensure the vigorous growth of seedlings in the coming year.

4. Strengthen management

Farming: Intercrop leguminous crops in the walnut orchard, and promote the growth of walnut trees through the cultivation of intercrops; intercrop green manure, combined with deep plowing and pressure Green is better. Adult orchards are weeded 2 to 3 times a year from April to September and plowed once in autumn and winter.

Fertilization: Apply basal fertilizer after fruit picking every autumn, mainly organic fertilizer, or supplemented by Ramla special fertilizer. Apply 20-30 kg per mu for saplings, and 50-50 kg per mu during the early fruiting period. 100 kilograms, and 150-200 kilograms per acre for large trees during the fruiting period; fertilization methods can be ring, strip, or hole-shaped.

Irrigation and drainage: Timely irrigation should be carried out during flowering, rapid fruit growth, after fertilization, and winter drought; pay attention to drainage during the rainy season.

5. Plastic pruning

Pruning period: Pruning of walnuts during dormancy may cause bleeding, so the pruning period is appropriate in autumn. If the saplings have no fruit, you can start harvesting in late August in advance. For adult trees, harvesting should be done around October after fruit picking, before the leaves turn yellow.

High-yielding tree shape: High-yielding walnut tree rows mainly have a sparsely layered trunk shape and a natural round head shape with multiple main branches. The main trunk is sparsely layered: the trunk height is 1.2-1.5 meters, there are three main branches in the first layer, the distance within the layer is 10-20 cm, the base angle of the main branches is 70 degrees, and there are 3-4 first-level side branches on each main branch; There are two main branches on the second floor, and the main branches on the third and fourth floors grow on the central pole.

This tree shape requires light pruning, takes shape quickly, and bears fruit early, which is conducive to early birth and high yield of saplings.
