In March of the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), the Guangdong Provincial Government decided to establish Baoting County.
Baoting was liberated on February 11, 1948, and the Baoting County Democratic Government was established on April 16. The county government is located in Baocheng Town, and is affiliated with the Qiongya East District Commissioner's Office. In August of the same year, the Ethnic Minority Border District Committee and Special Office were established, and Baoting was affiliated with the special agency.
The Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region was established on July 1, 1952. Baoting is under the jurisdiction of the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region.
In October 1955, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region was renamed Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and Baoting was under the jurisdiction of the autonomous prefecture.
In February 1962, the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was restored, and Baoting County was affiliated to the Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
In April 1988, it was affiliated to Hainan Province.
