Evaluation of canon EF-S 10- 18mm STM with good quality and low price.
These three lenses are very popular with beginners and home users because of their low price and wide focal length coverage. Of course, I think the reason why I like this is more because these three lenses are really cheap. Canon introduced a brand-new ultra-wide lens EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lens (equivalent focal length 16-29mm) this year, which filled the previous "Three Treasures of the Poor", so today we will show you the performance of this lens in all aspects.
Advantages:
1. Cheap price
2. Lightweight and portable
2. Ultra-wide focal length
3. The lens compensation effect with Canon EOS fuselage is obvious.
Disadvantages:
1. The workmanship is a bit ordinary.
2. The aperture is slightly smaller
3. The glare is a little obvious

Buying guide:
At present, another ultra-wide lens in Canon APS-C format IS the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens with the equivalent of about 16-35mm introduced by Canon in 2004, and there is no IS image stabilization. The new EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 is STM lens not only has anti-shake function, but also uses STM stepping motor, which makes autofocus smoother and lighter.
In terms of price, EF-S10-18 mm F/4.5-5.6 ISTM is also quite close to the people. Now the price is 2399 yuan. Click to view the details. Although the maximum aperture is a little small, you can get a zoom lens with ultra-wide focal length at this price, and other factors are not so important. You don't need such a large aperture during the day, but shooting with a tripod at night can solve the problem of small aperture, and I think the focal length is more important than aperture for shooting objects such as starry sky at night. In short, I think this is the best choice for Canon APS-C format users who like ultra-wide focal length at present.
Overall light and portable
Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM has a closest focusing distance of 0.22m and an equivalent focal length of 16-29mm, and its overall size is very small and light, with a weight of only 240g, which is similar to Canon EF-S/KL, the most common lens.

▲ Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISSTM is an anti-shake technology with four-step compensation effect.
Summary:
This lens is light and compact, very convenient to carry, and it is really a good lens suitable for travel. However, considering this price, don't say that the material is not enough and there is no focus frame.
The resolution of the lens center is very good.
Canon EF-S 1 0-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lens adopts the design of 1 1 group 14 lens, including1UD lens and two aspheric lenses.
▲ MTF curve of Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM.
How to interpret MTF curve? Show me!
According to the lens curve of Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM, the resolution of this lens is very good at the maximum aperture and F8, and the image quality at the edge of 10mm is seriously degraded, and other performances are acceptable. We can look at the MTF curve of an ultra-wide lens EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM introduced by Canon in 2004.
▲ Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens curve.
It can be seen from these two pictures that the optical quality of the lens of Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM is obviously better than that of the previous lens of Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM.
However, we still need to test the lens of Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISSTM in the evaluation environment. We tested the resolution performance of this lens with ISO 12233 standard resolution test card, and then analyzed the test results with Imatest software. In this test, Canon EOS 7D Mark II (20.2 million effective pixels) and Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lenses are used for testing.
▲ Center resolution test results
▲ Edge resolution test results
The test results show that the performance of Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM is basically the same as that shown in the MTF diagram. The central resolution is good at F5.6 and F8, while the best edge resolution is at F8 aperture, so on the whole, this lens can show good resolution at F8 aperture.
▲ indoor real shot sample 100% screenshot.
Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM has taken 0/00% screenshots of samples taken indoors, and the performance is consistent with the objective test results, and the resolution is still good.
▲ Aperture: F8 Shutter: 1/4s Sensitivity: ISO 100
Local screenshots of outdoor proofs also show good resolution performance.
Distortion test: After distortion correction is turned on, the distortion is almost invisible.
Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM is a super wide-angle lens, and distortion is definitely an inevitable problem of this lens. Because the testing machine Canon EOS 7D Mark II has added lens distortion correction, this function is particularly useful for wide-angle lenses. Moreover, because this lens was introduced before Mark II of Canon EOS 7D, Mark II of Canon EOS 7D already has the calibration data of this lens. In the process of testing, we also tested in two modes: closed internal deformation correction and open deformation correction.
▲ Canon EOS 7D Mark II added lens distortion correction.
The lens distortion test still uses the combination of Canon EOS 7D Mark II (20.2 million effective pixels) and Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lens, and later uses Imatest software to process the data. The test result is expressed as a percentage, and the closer the value is to zero, the smaller the distortion is. The numerical value of the test result is negative, indicating barrel distortion and outward expansion of the picture. On the contrary, it means pincushion distortion and the picture shrinks inward.
10mm end deformation test:
▲ 10mm terminal internal deformation correction before starting.
Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lens has a barrel distortion of -3.09% at the end of 10mm, which can be said to be very obvious.
▲ 10mm terminal starts internal deformation correction.
However, the test result after the internal deformation correction is turned on is -0.255%, so it can be clearly felt that the distortion compensation effect after the internal deformation correction is turned on is very obvious.
18mm end deformation test:
▲ 18mm unopened end internal deformation correction.
The distortion of Canon EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 ISTM lens at18 mm end is 0.209%, which belongs to pincushion distortion. The distortion test result is within 65438 0%, and the distortion effect is within the acceptable range.
▲ 18mm opening machine internal deformation correction
Similarly, the distortion of 18mm end was effectively compensated after the internal distortion correction was started, and the test result was -0.06 1%, which was almost negligible.
Summary:
Needless to say, you can also see how obvious the correction effect of Canon's EOS SLR on the original lens is. At present, it is known that Canon EOS 7D Mark II can directly correct the distortion in the machine, while other models can only use Canon DPP software for post-correction, so you may wish to consider using this lens with Canon EOS 7D Mark II fuselage.
Dark angle test: After the peripheral light correction is turned on, the dark angle almost disappears.
Dark angle is also the longest problem encountered by wide-angle lenses. After the peripheral light correction is turned on in the machine, most of the dark corners of Canon EF-S10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 ISS STM are basically eliminated, and only a little dark corners appear at the maximum apertures 10mm and18 mm.
▲ 10mm End the dark angle test (turn on the peripheral light correction)
▲ 18mm end dark angle test (turn on peripheral light correction)
At present, many SLR bodies of Canon EOS have built-in lens peripheral light correction function, and those without Canon EF-S10-18 mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM data can download and update data through the network.
Glare test: I met an obvious ghost.
Canon's lenses use a total of 14 lenses, so there are 28 reflective surfaces. So many reflective surfaces will inevitably encounter ghost problems. Let's take a look at the actual performance of this lens.
▲ Glare test
When shooting outdoors, the lens is not equipped with a hood, so it encounters obvious glare, so if you want to avoid glare, try to use a hood.
