On November 22, 2023, the results of the 2023 co-optation of academicians of the two academies were officially announced. The Chinese Academy of Sciences elected 59 additional academicians, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering elected 74 additional academicians. Among them, among the newly elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Shen Xueshun from the Department of Environmental and Textile Engineering and Kang Xiangtao from the Department of Agriculture are both from Nanyang.
It is understood that Shen Xueshun is a native of Sheqi County, Nanyang City. He is the deputy director of the Earth System Numerical Prediction Center of the China Meteorological Administration, the head of the innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Meteorological Innovation Project and the Weather and Climate Director of the China Meteorological Administration. Chief scientist of the Integrated Model Key Innovation Team and director of the Numerical Forecasting Professional Committee of the Chinese Meteorological Society. He focuses on the scientific and technological innovation of numerical forecasting in my country. He is a disciplinary leader in this field and has played a leading role in the self-reliance of core meteorological science and technology.
Personal profile of Shen Xueshun
Shen Xueshun, male, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from the Department of Geology and Geography of Lanzhou University in June 1987; and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Atmospheric Science of Lanzhou University in June 1990 Master of Science. He is currently the deputy director and second-level researcher of the Numerical Forecasting Center of the China Meteorological Administration. On November 24, 2020, he was named a national advanced worker in 2020. In 2023, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In 1992, he went to Japan to study at the Climate System Research Center of the University of Tokyo. In June 1996, he obtained a doctorate in science from Lanzhou University (jointly trained by China and Japan). From October 1994 to June 2000, he served as an assistant researcher and instructor of the Ministry of Education at the Climate System Research Center of the University of Tokyo. From July 2000 to October 2002, he worked as a recruitment researcher at Japan Advanced Information Science and Technology Research Institute. He has been a researcher at the Numerical Forecast Research Center of the Academy of Meteorological Sciences since November 2002, and was appointed as the chief researcher in February 2003.
